Solstice Drabble

Happy Solstice!

The earth spins away from the sun, dragging the frightened moon with it. Brittle stars crack the walls of heaven, bringing angels to their knees. Harsh winds howl beneath our skin, stale ice stops the flow of our blood. Everything shivers, even our tears. A billion eyes blink in the cold, a billion souls sleep until spring.

The Goddess is older than the moon, older than the stars, even. She is our first story, our first weaver of dreams. Her hair is the color of trees, the eternal brown of its nesting branches. Her blood is the color of berries, the kind birds eat in the dead of winter. Her fairy snow frosts the earth, until all is still.

The Goddess turns, and with a gentle push of her hand, the world starts its long, slow journey toward the summer sun.
