Asylum - Ep 1.10

John texts them coordinates, which points to the Roosevelt Asylum. When Sam points out that this is weird (it’s the only way he contacts them) Dean replies…

"Sam! Dad’s telling us to go somewhere, we’re going.”

Sam isn’t happy about this, but he goes. This is an example of Dean telling him what to do (which will come up later in the ep).

When they do their good cop, bad cop thing, and Sam pushes Dean, he shoves him harder than necessary.

Talking to the therapist, Sam gets this question…

“This brother you’re road tripping with… how do you really feel about him?"

And when they’re at the asylum, Cat asks Sam if Dean is his boss.

So, in an ep where the patients at the old Roosevelt Asylum had been experimented on with rage therapy, Sam ends up having the same thing happen to him. And this leads to a big confrontation between the brothers!

In the basement, Dean is looking for the secret room where Ellicott worked on his patients. When he discovers it, Sam tells him to step away from the door. When Dean tells him to put the gun down, Sam asks if it’s an order. Because, he’s getting tired of taking Dean’s orders… and shoots him in the chest with rock salt!

Sam claims that he’s telling the truth for the first time.

“I mean, why are we even here? Cause you’re following dad’s orders like a good little soldier? Because you always do what he says without question? Are you that desperate for his approval?

When Dean points that this isn’t Sam talking (not really), Sam replies;

“That’s the difference between you and me. I have a mind of my own. I’m not pathetic, like you.”

And when Dean asks if Sam is going to kill him, Sam says…

“ You know what, I am sick of doing what you tell me to do. We’re no closer to finding dad then we were six months ago.”

Dean hands him his gun, saying real bullets will work better than rock salt. He then asks if Sam hates him that much, that he could kill his own brother. Sam pulls the trigger several times, but the gun is empty. And that’s when Dean knocks him out!

Once they get outside, Sam apologizes, saying that he didn’t mean any of it. When Sam sees that Dean doesn’t accept this, he asks if they need to talk about it, but Dean isn’t in the “sharing and caring kind of mood”, and just wants some sleep.

edit by me

Later on, they’re asleep at the motel, when Dean’s phone rings. When Dean doesn’t move Sam picks it up and answers it… and it’s dad!

It's interesting that Sam started the season estranged from his family, and wanting to stay away from John, but now he's obsessed with finding his dad. He's desperate for answers (about Jess, about mom).

This is a big ep for Sam, and though his feelings were exaggerated, these are are issues he needs to deal with. And we'll see how he works through some of this, in the next two eps.

I’ll be asking questions with each ep. I’d love to hear your answers. And also, anything else you'd like to say about the ep. :)

SPN questions for Asylum

1. Sam claims that he didn't mean any of the things he said to Dean. Do you think he did?

2. Why did Dean say that it wasn't really Sam talking (when Sam tried to kill him), but later on, when Sam said he didn't mean any of it, Dean didn't agree?

3. Favorite Sam moment/scene.
4. Favorite brother scene.

My answers...

1. In his right mind, Sam wouldn't shoot Dean with rock salt or try to kill him, so that's something he didn't mean. I believe he did mean what he said, at least on a level of basic issues, but it was heightened and expressed more harshly because he had no control over the level of anger he was forced to feel.

2. Maybe Dean had tried to reason with Sam, but it didn't work. Or, Dean meant that the way Sam was expressing his issues wasn't him.

3. and 4. There's only one answer for both of these questions, and that's the scene with the big confrontation.
