Bugs - ep 1.08
I have mixed feelings about this ep. It’s my least favorite of season 1, because of the bugs (there's parts of it I can't re-watch), but it has a lot of great brother moments, so it ranks higher for that part of it.
So, I won't be bringing up any stuff about bugs here, lol.
When we first see the boys, Dean has just won some money at a bar, and joins Sam outside. Sam questions the way they’ve been earning money, that it’s not honest (hustling pool, credit card scams), and suggests they get day jobs sometimes. Dean points out that there’s “honest” or “fun and easy”, and he picks the latter. After all, it’s what they’re good at. And hunting is their day job, so….
Sam is defending the normal life by rejecting this aspect of the hunting life.
They shift gears, find a case, and go to Oasis Plains (and we find out that Dean watches Oprah, lol).
When they get there, they bicker over who will check out the hole that the victim fell in. Dean says he’ll go if Sam is scared, and calls him chicken. They flip a coin, but Sam catches it mid-air, and insists on going, lol.
They check out the housing development, and Dean says that he’d be freaked out growing up in a place like this. Sam says that there’s nothing wrong with “normal”. And once again, we have them taking sides.
When the boys pretend to be interested in buying a home, Larry the developer tells them that “we accept homeowners of any race, religion, color, or sexual orientation.” They explain that they’re just brothers, and them being taken for a couple is something that will be brought up again, minutes later, when Lynda the head of sales repeats the same line about “sexual orientation”. But this time, Dean smacks Sam’s ass, and calls him honey, lol.
Sam meets Larry’s son, Matt. We find out that Matt doesn’t get along with his dad. Sam compares him to his own dad, but Dean says that John never treated them like that. Sam says that Dean wasn't treated like that, because he was “perfect”, but dad was all over his case.
Matt says that his father doesn’t listen to him, because he’s too disappointed in his freak son. Sam tells him that in two years, something wonderful will happen… college. Then Matt can get away from his dad. Dean disagrees, says that Matt should stick with his family.
Later on, Dean brings this up again, and they have a big conversation about how Sam thinks John sees him. As a disappointment, as not good enough. But Dean says that dad was never disappointed in Sam. That John was scared, because he was afraid of what could happen to Sam when he wasn’t around. That John went to Stanford to check on Sam, to make sure he was alright. Sam asks Dean why he didn’t tell him this sooner. Dean says it’s a two-way street. Sam could’ve picked up the phone.
In the last scene, Sam mentions that he wants to find dad so he can apologize to him. Dean says they’ll find him, Sam will apologize, and then within minutes, “you guys will be at each other’s throats”. Sam laughs, and agrees.
There’s some good insight on Sam in this ep, with all the discussion about having a normal life. He also identifies with Matt, who has problems with his dad, too. And then there’s a the great discussion with Dean about their dad, where Sam is told that John wasn’t disappointed in him, and was concerned about his safety. This leaves Sam feeling that he wants to apologize to his father.
I’ll be asking questions with each ep. I’d love to hear your answers. And also, anything else you'd like to say about the ep. :)
SPN questions for Bugs
1. Dean said that John was concerned about Sam’s safety, all alone at Stanford. Then why did he tell Sam to never come back, when Sam left for college?
2. Favorite Sam moment/scene
3. Favorite brother scene
1. I’m not sure how to answer this. Because if John had stayed in contact with Sam and made him feel welcome as part of the family, then Sam could’ve spent time with them when he had a break from school, and they could’ve visited him at Stanford, and called to check up on him. Sam would’ve been less “alone” if John hadn’t rejected him for leaving.
2. My favorite Sam scene is the “big conversation” he has with Dean about their dad. It’s a big moment for him when he hears that John wasn’t disappointed in him, that his dad was concerned about him being alone, and checked on him to see that he was safe at Stanford.
3. My favorite brother scene is the same as the one for Sam. Some great communication between them, and I liked seeing how open they were to each other. I also love the “sexual orientation” scene, with the butt slap and Dean calling Sam “honey’. :)
