Of course, Sam is referring to more than the horror story he wrote in school many years ago... he's talking about the hunting life (and pretty much his life in general) being one long horror story.
I think the quote could also apply to the year 2020! I'm sure Sam would agree. :P

You probably don't remember me, um, but my name is Sam Winchester, and I just wanted to thank you.
