SPN Drabble - May 2nd

May 02, 2017 14:27

I saw something on tumblr today about how nice it'll be for Sam to get birthday greetings from his mom, for the first time. I've thought about this too, but I see it differently. I wrote this drabble a few days ago, and though it's a sad thing to post on Sam's birthday, I still want to share it.

Mary remembers the date, even though she’s been trying all morning to forget. Instead of the usual routine, she ends up lingering in bed. Ketch doesn’t seem to mind, and he pulls her closer to him. She only needs a few minutes to sort things out. Priorities don’t change, no matter what the occasion. Her life is about finding the target, and pulling the trigger. She says she's doing it for family, but family has faded into the distant fabric of her being.

Ketch is wrong… she doesn’t have to make a choice between work and family ties. After all, she can put a neat little bow on the word “family”, dress it up to be something that it’s not. Family is a default thing… an easy word to pronounce, even when the word has lost it’s true meaning.

There’s blanks to fill in, but they’ll stay blank. Mary makes sure of that, as she erases Sam's text message on May 2.
