The Nobel Prizes are to be announced in the next few days.
Time to state my guesses for this year's winners:
Chemistry: Krzysztof Matyjaszewski - he won the Wolf Prize this year, which seems to be a solid indicator for people who are now Nobel contenders. He is a polymer scientist who has devised a methodology that revolutionized macromolecule synthesis.
Physics: This is a bit too off from my own knowledge area to get a good sense of who's a contender: some of the rumblings I've heard are for Hideo Ohno, W.E. Moerner... but I'm in position to evaluate.
Medicine / Biology: Alright folks, this is a good one. Last year was Edwards for IVF. The year before was Szostak, Blackburn (love her), and Grieder for telomeres. So much to think about... I think, looking at Lasker winners, that this year might be Yamanaka, Gurdon (and MAYBE MAYBE Jaenisch) for iPS cells. Though, recently, someone told they thought it would Brian Druker, Nicholas Lydon, and Charles Sawyers for CML/philadelphia chromosome/gleevec. This is basically pitting the basic science Lasker award to the clinical Lasker award of the same year (2009). I guess we see what happens on Monday. Good times.
