I have just experienced my first nerdcore show.
No, srsly. The opening band was
Stovokor, a Klingon death metal band which sings only in Klingon and gave shout outs to Kahless and the homeworld of Qo'noS.
The headliner was
Captured! By Robots, a one-man show with eight robots which play different instruments, including two drummers, a combination bassist and guitarist, three Hopeless Hornsmen, a little ape with cymbals and a big ape with a tambourine in its head. One of the drummers, the bass/guitarist and the two apes talk.
They played such songs as "Data Is Fully Functional," a cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing," and "Wesley Crusher Fuck Off."
stopword and I had no real idea what we were walking into, so I was dressed kinda preppy for the crowd, BUT I was the first person to shout "Kapla!" when the Klingons came out.
In order to even get to the venue I had to fight my way through the Rose Fest, which included not only a parade but a road race which contained pirates, a hot chick in flippers, Batman and Elvis.
I think I'm beginning to understand what's really behind those "KEEP PORTLAND WEIRD" stickers. And support it. If half this shit had gone on in Boston the entire place would be under martial law.
This town is awesome.
