Feeling a bit stressed and cranky at myself for not following up on something at work the way I should have, and thereby disappointing someone. I loathe that feeling with the fiber of my being - so you'd think I'd take greater pains to avoid it, right?
Anyway, chocolate and pictures of
Guys n' Dolls Ewan are helping. A little.
In "god, people really, really suck sometimes" news, there's this kid
Zach. Zach recently
came out to his conservative Christian parents. Who proceeded to enroll him - against his will - in one of those "fix your gay kid through religion" brainwashing camps. Here's
the rules of the place, in case you're wondering. Also an
ABC news story on the place - (search for "changing sexuality with religion").
No doubt this happens fairly frequently - people are too small-minded for this to be a rare occurance. But
ruedifference suggested maybe, this time, there's something we could do to help. Now, granted, there's not a whole lot to do - what the parents have done isn't illegal, and the center itself isn't illegal, so what then? Rue has
address for the local PFLAG and ACLU, who can perhaps offer legal help - IMO, the best thing for Zach to do is become legally emancipated from his parents so he can decide for himself not to go, and have it count. Also addresses for the local Congressman and Senator - just bringing attention to this sort of crap counts. The group
Queer in Action is protesting outside the gates of "Love in Action" (*spits*), which runs the camp.
ETA: No doubt "Love in Action" (*spits*) agrees with the leader of the New York Christian Coalition, who thinks gays ought to
wear warning labels. Like
little pink triangles, perhaps?. (Thanks to
zarq for the links.)
gehayi has a whole bunch of
interesting related links, about Love in Action and the culture of anti-gay brainwashing.
