“Do you want to have kids one day?” Reid asked, using a napkin to wipe off his mouth. “I mean you’re probably going to work long hours once you’re finished college since you want to be a lawyer. It’s not easy to juggle both your job and your private life at the same time when you have to work a lot. Believe me I know what I’m talking about.”
Luke gave his husband a kick under the table to try to shut him up. Reid groaned softly in pain and looked at his loving husband over the top of his wire-rimmed glasses. Their son Ben and his girlfriend Sophia sat on the opposite of the table and Reid had been bombarding her with questions ever since they arrived. At first his husband had been testing her general knowledge and now he had gone over to ask her very personal questions. Every attempt to take over the conversation had failed because Reid just wouldn’t keep his mouth shut. He felt bad for their son, who had already been very nervous when he called this morning, and his girlfriend was clearly uncomfortable by now as well.
“Come to the kitchen with me. Now.” Luke muttered only loud enough for Reid to hear, turning his attention back to his son and his girlfriend for a moment. He excused them both and rose to his feet. Reid pushed his glasses up before he stood himself and followed his husband grudgingly into the kitchen.
“What are you doing?” Luke cursed under his breath once they were alone. “Are you trying to scare Sophia away? ‘Cause you’re doing a good job on that.”
Reid rolled his eyes. “You’re overreacting. I was only testing her general knowledge a little and obviously she isn’t very smart. Our son deserves better than that.”
Luke playfully slapped his husband on the arm. “Reid!”
“Hey watch it Snyder!” The older man grumbled, rubbing his arm.
“That’s Snyder-Oliver to you!” Luke responded. He let out a sigh after a moment of silence and took a step forward. “Baby, I know that it’s not easy to let him go, but Ben is 19 years old and he is old enough to make his own decisions. I think Sophia is a really nice girl. Maybe she is not the right one for our son or maybe she is, but he’ll figure that out on his own. We can only support him in whatever choice he will make.”
Reid crossed his arms above his chest. “I don’t like her.”
Luke couldn’t help laughing. “If he had brought home somebody with the IQ of 150 you wouldn’t like her either.” His husband glared at him causing Luke to step even closer to him, taking both of Reid’s hands in his own. “Remember when we first met? Pretty much everybody in Oakdale didn’t get why I wanted to be with you. Some of them even told me that you weren’t good for me. But guess what? I didn’t give a shit.”
Reid snorted but the corners of his mouth were twitching a moment later.
“And here we are, more than 20 years later.” Luke smiled, pressing a kiss to Reid’s jaw. “Over time they all came to accept us as a couple and I’m sure that everybody knows by now that you’re good at heart even if you still try to deny it.” The blond teased. “Ben is a good man, we need to trust him with this, you know?”
“I guess you’re right.” The older man let out a sigh, but there was a smile on his lips when he continued. “I hate when everything you say makes so much sense.”
Luke grinned and wrapped his arms around his husband to share a soft kiss with him. They leaned their foreheads together for a moment after they ended the kiss and they just lingered like that for a moment, before the blond pulled back only far enough to be able to look at Reid. “Now go apologize to our son and our possible future daughter-in-law.” He grinned. “I will be out in a minute with the dessert and if you behave there will be your very own dessert later on when we are alone.” Luke wiggled his eyebrows to accentuate his point further.
Reid groaned and leaned in to press a kiss to Luke’s neck just behind his earlobe, his voice barely above a whisper when he said “Can’t wait.”
“I love you.”
“Love you too.” Reid replied, kissing his husband one more time before he headed back to the living room, while Luke’s words were still on his mind.
***
Later that day when Luke and Reid were alone again the married couple lay on the couch together, snuggled under a warm blanket after slowly making love. Luke’s head was resting on Reid’s shoulder and their legs were tangled together, while the older man was lazily stroking his husbands arm.
The blond shivered under the touch, Reid loved that he could still make him feel that way. Luke pressed a kiss to his husband’s shoulder, before he lifted his head to look at him and grinned. “Thank you for behaving during dessert.”
Reid rolled his eyes. He had done his best not to ask any other personal questions while they had dessert, deciding to leave the talking to his husband. Even he had to admit that Sophia actually seemed like a nice girl as far as he could tell after the short amount of time. “I guess Sophia isn’t so bad.” Reid said after a moment of silence.
Luke chuckled. “Told you so.”
“Shut up.” Reid said, clearly a smile in his voice.
“Make me.” Luke teased with the biggest grin on his face.
Shifting slightly Reid immediately captured Luke’s lips with his own, gently kissing his husband. The kiss was long and slow making both of them shiver and they easily got lost into each other.
People were often surprised to learn that they had been together for more than 20 years already, as they were still head over heels in love with each other. They were often asked for their secret recipe to keep a relationship fresh, but Luke and Reid would only smile. It hadn’t always been love, peace and harmony in their relationship, but they knew that their love was stronger than everything. Each of them often regretted that it took them so long to finally get together, but they also knew that nothing would ever come between them. This was it for them. Two halves of one circle.
