Fed up with additives

Jun 03, 2009 13:03

A few years ago, George and i started thinking more carefully about the quality of food we ate...so, amongst other things, we started looking more closely at the ingredients list of packaged processed foods.

A lengthy rant about food additives... )

i wondered who the mystery commentor was!
Yep, the link was still there...and i have to say it scared me even more than my info source did! Yes, the article is claimed to be false...and i agree it is majorly over the top, but i'm not willing to simply accept the one liners "safe for the general public" either. More or less safe, yes, i'm sure. But add that to all the other rubbish additives people pump into their bodies unaware and its the cocktail that worries me more.

In the 1950s average male sperm count was around 100 million. These days the average count is around 40 million (and below 20 million is considered to be sub-fertile). You have to wonder what has happened in the last 50 years. Well, highly processed food with all these additives is probably a start.

You're right...fresh is best and all things in moderation.

I'm confused - which article is claimed to be false?

One of the other, less publicized problems of food additives is that they can and frequently do alter the body's ability to absorb the normal nutrients we get from the food we're eating. I can't think of a specific example off the top of my head - but I have a couple of very good books on the subject (books that reference the clinical studies in which these things were discovered). Sometimes the additives act on the food so that the nutritional benefits are negated or can't be absorbed by the body.

Unfortunately, some times it just seems we should go back to growing our own food and cooking it ourselves - but if we did that, none of us would have time to work!

and if you grew your own food how would you water it these days?

At the top of the link to that article it said 'FALSE'...it was a debunked article.

I actually didn't know that about additives inhibiting natural nutrient absorption. Yes, our current fast paced lifestyles don't really have enough time for slow food! We're going to give it our best shot though.

I had a boyfriend who was allergic to aspartame, it used to give him migraines. I have never been a fan of artifical sweeteners myself, and I can actually taste the difference. My mum bought 'lite' fruit juice when she was here and I wondered why it tasted funny until i took a second look at the bottle and discovered it wasn't the usual full calorie version I buy. Even when the diabetes clinic was telling us to go for lite versions of things ("Oh, but check the labels for these numbers first...") I stuck to the usual ones and just watched the quantities.

Migraines, ouch. we don't tend to buy any products with aspartame in them, although i'm not sure i'd notice the taste difference anyway. I just figure that if i can have natural sugar then why have the chemical version?

Ack, got interrupted. Anyway, they knew certian numbers to be an issue because it would cross the placenta. I just decided to not play that game.

Why can't we just buy real food anymore? I find it endlessly frustrating. It really is a lot harder than you think to avoid all this stuff, even when you are trying to do the right thing. Especially as no one has the time to prepare every meal from scratch anymore.

It's hard to buy quality, whole food at a reasonable price. We don't eat a lot of meat but spend a little extra on quality fruit+vege and the basics like bread, pasta, rice. We try to cook bulk so that a meal lasts at least a couple of nights. Yep, it's hard to find time to live healthy! Life is often too damn fast for slow food! LOL
