Several months ago I promised someone I'd get this footage uploaded somewhere. It's taken me so long that she may not even be in the fandom any more *hangs head in shame*. It's still a good interview though, and still worth making available. I'll probably cross-post this to
mark_harrison because I think that's where I made my original promise.

It's the same for me, because I love to explore all those levels within the characters. A one-dimensional character wouldn't work for me, and it seems to me (this is a generalisation, I know) that where a film or TV show is exploring a male/male bond, they sometimes allow more leeway in character development. I think it's one of the reasons why the portrayal of het relationships doesn't interest me in the same way - there often seems to be a basis of inequality (a total turn-off for me) or stereotyping there, or they just fall back on some bog-standard love scene.
And like you, I grew up with those male friendship shows too, and it's telling that they're the things I remember most of all the stuff I watched!
I can see what you mean about 'unlearning' Han/Leia. Because my emotional investment was primarily in Luke I didn't have that to overcome. Even so, I find I need to work out what has become of Han and Leia's relationship for every story I write (even if it doesn't feature). But sub-text - I hope you have fun uncovering it :D. I see it very close to the surface, but we all see things in different ways. It's a rare treat to get to talk about it these days, because the Luke/Han fandom is very quiet!
the ensemble is what counts. Sooo true that it hurts when TV shows producers seem to forget about this great rule.
Ain't that the truth! So much stuff gets churned out where there's a total lack of chemistry. I do think George Lucas had some true moments of genius - picking those three was certainly one of them.
I'd like to ask you if I can reupload it and post it to my journal
Please feel free to upload it wherever you like :). It deserves to be shared and spread around. I posted it to one community that gets listed in Jedi News, so hopefully people will see it there too. There's been a lot of ANH love around lately, with the Celebrations of last year and the 30th Anniversary stuff.
