My university (henceforth referred to as "uni") has been on strike on and off for the last few weeks. Here's a quick recap of my past month:
10/27-11/4 Vacation. Lovely. Went to Paris. Saw Bobbie. Fantastic. No classes, obviously.
11/5-11/6 (morning) Classes as usual. No French Lit, as my teacher was giving a conference.
11/6 (afternoon)-11/14 Strike. Uni blocked entirely. See fbook for photos. Not a whole lot to do, as I have used most of my money on sweaters because I was cold. Had 2 votes. Both were declared "undemocratic" by the grévistes (strikers) and blockade continues.
11/15-11/19 Police evict strikers from Hall B, their "headquarters". Classes resume as usual. Except my Celtic Civ teacher never showed, so I only had class 11/19.
11/20-11/25 Blocked. Again. Another vote, on the 22 & 23rd showed a 73% majority against the blockade.
11/26 (morning) Police evict strikers again. Unblocked. Classes normal. Everything is lovely.
11/26 (evening) Hall B taken over again/blocked completely. Classes in Hall B canceled for Tuesday.
11/27 *grumble grumble* Here's today in a nutshell:
8h00: Campus open, Hall B closed due to occupation.
11h00: Campus open, fight between non-strikers and teachers against strikers, strikers lose, Hall B reopened.
12h15: Campus open, over 1000 university and high school students block the train station (la gare).
12h50: Campus open, 2000 strikers storm the center of town.
14h35: Campus open, 2000 strikers march to Rennes 2 campus, break down Hall B's doors, re-enter.
14h45: Campus closed until tomorrow morning.
Isn't life grand?
I'm so frustrated with this strike. I'm just getting bored. And worried that this semester will have been a waste because I won't get any grades. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. I don't know why the strikers can't accept the fact that the majority of the other students are against this freaking strike and blockade and just let it go! It seems to me that as long as the votes don't go their way (ie, FOR the blockade), they're just going to keep declaring them undemocratic and therefore invalid. All the votes, except the ones the grévistes do on their own that barely represent 5% of the student body, have been against the strike. I understand they like their universities the way they are, but COME ON! This is getting ridiculous. Seriously people. Grow up.
