About 11:30 this morning, I received a call from my dad that Mom had pushed her medical panic button and was having trouble staying conscious. Apparently she'd tried to reach my cell phone, but since it was in my purse in my desk, I didn't hear it. She wasn't quite "with it" enough to try my work number. She also tried to call dad, but he didn't answer. Luckily, after she pressed the button, the Life Alert (or whatever service it is) people were able to reach Dad.
Anyway, Dad called me to see if I could go check on her since he works about 30 minutes away from their house. I was out the door 5 minutes later, and on my way. When I got to their house, Mom was sitting in her wheelchair in the kitchen. She was awake, but considerably groggy. I asked her to try to tell me what happened. She said she'd been polishing some furniture, and she thought the fumes had gotten to her. I got her some water, which she drank with no problem, and kept talking to her. She was a bit out of it, but answered me every time.
I'm a bit skeptical that it was fumes because I didn't smell anything when I arrived, and the polish she was using didn't seem strong. I asked her if she'd accidentally taken her morning medicine twice, but she didn't think that was the case.
Dad arrived a few minutes later, and we got her into bed and covered up. She seemed cold and pale, so despite mom saying she never lost consciousness, I'm not sure I agree with her. The longer she laid in bed covered up, the more alert she seemed. She was able to laugh and joke with us before I left, so that's good.
That's where things stand right now. Dad is home with Mom the rest of the afternoon. We called the doctor's office to see if they thought we needed to do anything else for her. Mom was considerably more alert and engaged with the rest of the world by the time I left. I think she's going to be fine, but I have no idea what caused the problem, and I'm hoping this isn't a new trend.
And that was definitely a bit more excitement that I anticipated on a Wednesday. Yeesh.
