I can report that the
Trepid House bday this past Saturday night was a ravishing success. Guelph and Brantford took the house by storm.
Openers
dead love triangles from Brantford played a blazing trashing guitar set (unfortunately, I missed most of it).
Next, was
Elbow Beach Surf Club. With their short surf/rock tracks, I was itching for more... and dreaming of Christmas beaches. I heard echoes of the legendary
Surfaris and their hit
Wipe Out. However, the 2007 version of the genre is more youthful, energetic and challenging. This is definitely a band to watch.
After an inspirational set by Guelph's surf rock royalty, I "kung-fu danced/mock-surfed" the centerpiece living-room sofa elbow rests with 'Elbow front-women Lindsay Roe to the infectious beats of
Green Go.
To add to the birthday atmosphere, 'Elbow drummer Dougie Bazinet was celebrating his 24th... and so, pretty much every Green Go track was a shout-out to Dougie.
As if that wasn't enough, it appeared as if everyone knew Green Go's shout-it-out lyrics. With
Burnt Oak labelmates 'Elbow and carloads of friends in toe, Guelph made sure everyone did. Throw in sprinkle of "the random free-jazz sax guy"... and ladies and gentlemen, you got a magical musical night.
Indeed, as Green Go commands on their track "You know you want IT": "don't hold your breathe, dance 'till your death... forget all the rest." Zen.
I asked 'Go keyboardist Ferenc Stenton if the show was the best one his band ever played. He said: "indeed it was."
For anyone who hasn't been to the House, you MUST go. And, with two shows this coming weekend, it's hard not to:
