Room 231, Thursday Evening (After the Spa)

Mar 15, 2007 16:52

Feeling all buffed and polished after a few hours at the spa, Sam returned to her room with some chinese take-out. On the floor by the door was an envelope, which she grabbed on her way in. She opened it, not having expected any mail.

Jack, still meltingly relaxed from their day at the spa, strolled down the hall from his room to Sam's, and leaned in the doorway, smiling as he watched her. "What are you reading?"

"Huh?" Sam closed the information packet and turned to face Jack, feeling vaguely guilty. "Oh, some information about another job. Mac sent it to me."

"Oh." He really didn't know how to react to that, so he opted for staying where he was. "Do I know who Mac is?" The name rang a vague bell, but then it was a pretty common one.

"I don't know if you ever met him, but he was the Shop teacher here last year. I was his TA, both semesters." She looked a little sheepish, "Ah, he's the one who looked like a younger version of Jack O'Neill."

"Ah." He remembered now. "The one you kissed while wearing leather pants, right? And he's offering you a job doing..." The relaxation was wearing off, and he stood up a bit straighter, eyebrows raised in question.

"Freelance troubleshooting work," she checked the letter again, not really noticing Jack's reaction, "with possible forays into hunting terrorists and international diplomacy. It's a real think-outside-the-box type place."

Jack winced. That was about as perfect a job for Sam as anything he'd ever heard of. Add in an attractive guy who he knew she'd had a thing for, who looked like the other guy she'd had a serious thing for, and the Time Agency had serious competition.

"It sounds kind of perfect for you, actually." He still hadn't moved out of the doorway, and somehow his arms had ended up crossed across his chest.

"Yeah?" Sam considered that for a minute, then set the paperwork aside. "Maybe. We'll see, I guess." She glanced over at Jack, and was a bit confused by his reluctance to come into the room. "Why are you hanging on the doorframe? Oh, and I have food, if you're hungry."

Jack was a bit confused about what he was feeling - happy for Sam, unhappy for himself, and something that felt a tiny bit like it might be jealousy - and he didn't like it at all. But he made himself smile and walked over, dropping to sit next to her. "No reason, just didn't want to disturb you." He was already reaching for a container of chinese as he said, "Food would be good, thanks."

"Hey, a day of being pampered can take a lot out of you," she laughed, using her fingers to steal a piece of chicken and chewed it as she studied Jack. He seemed somehow...off. "You sure you're okay?"

He mock-frowned at her and pulled the container closer, snagging a pair of chopsticks with his other hand. "I'm fine. Just not used to being pampered like that. It's exhausting," he teased, selecting a piece of chicken and chewing it thoughtfully. When he was done he asked, voice carefully neutral, "Are you going to take the job?"

"Honestly? I don't know," she shrugged, "but it's not like it's been offered yet, either. This is just the application." Which she'd already filled out and was prepared to send back.

"You going to apply?" He focused on picking through the container, looking for a cashew, which he found and popped in his mouth, still not looking at her.

And that guilty feeling was back. "Yeah, I am."

He nodded, not even slightly surprised at her answer, or the answering pang of disappointment he felt. Plucking out a slice of carrot, he contemplated it for a long moment. "You'd be stupid not to."

Sam was more determined than ever that she was missing something. "Jack?"
