Jack, still wearing his suit but looking rather tired and rumpled, tie loose and shirt partially untucked, had stopped in town to pick up handwavy Italian takeaway from Cafe Fina.
As he knocked on Sam's door, it's possible the smell of garlic bread and carbonara might be sneaking under the door.

"Nothing! It was just a long day." He held up the box of food in front of him. "I brought dinner," he said meekly. Or as close to meekly as he could get.

"It did. There was only one sort of almost a close call," he said lightly. "And I'm sorry about how vague my message was." He waited a second, then asked, "Can I come in?"

"Well, I wasn't sure you'd actually want to see me past making sure I was in one piece." He set the box down on the desk and slid out of his jacket with a groan, chucking it over the back of the chair. "It seemed safer to ask."

"Long, stressful. Honestly, watching Parker was the worst bit," he said, ignoring the food in favour of flopping face down on the bed next to Sam. "And that would be beyond amazing, if you don't mind." Jack kicked off his shoes and pressed his head against Sam's knee.

That noise? Was Jack attempting to purr as he pressed against her fingers. "Parker said I could tell you. I played bodyguard slash security slash dumb and dangerous while we," and he braced himself slightly before telling her the next bit, "snuck into an off-limits part of the Centre. And it was hard on her - if she'd been any tenser, I think she would have snapped in half."

"Not really?" Jack rolled onto his side so he could look up at her, which of course meant he had to be honest. "Okay, maybe a little. But even if we'd gotten rolled, Parker had a cover story, and she's allowed to be in the Centre."

Sam took a deep breath and released it, a little shakily if Jack was looking for that kind of thing. "I know, and I get it. I just don't like the idea of you going into possible trouble if I'm not there to watch your back."
As he knocked on Sam's door, it's possible the smell of garlic bread and carbonara might be sneaking under the door.

She was trying to be adult about the message, because she'd done to the same thing to him a couple of times now.
