Room 231, Morning

Sam hadn't slept well--no nightmares, but she'd been buried under many, many kittens and every time she shifted, all of them had to readjust their positions and fight and nip at her and each other, a few had to eat, get water, or use the litter box, and then there was more positioning ( Read more... )

Kawalsky's hair was still damp from his shower when he knocked on Sam's door. The more he thought about it, the more he was convinced that if the Goa'uld was real then she would have noticed at yesterday's meeting. But it was chaotic and it was easy to get confused with all of the different magical and superheroey type people around.

He had to be sure. He knocked again. "Sam? It's Charlie, you in?"

She opened the door. "Hey. C'mon in."

He stepped inside and went to say something, but was distracted. "You have kittens." One of them clung to his leg. "Weetiny clingy but adorable kittens."

"Yes, I do," she said picking a gray one up and waving its paw at Charlie. "Although three of them are vicious hunters--they brought me a frog corpse earlier."

Kawalsky scratched one of them on the head gently. "Good kitty." He glanced nervously at Sam. "So...you're not picking up any weird vibes from me right now, are you?"

The smart ass response was almost automatic, until she saw Charlie's face. She took a minute, concentrated, and shook her head. "No, of course not. Did something happen?"

He rubbed a hand over his face and went to sit down. He took a deep breath and started to tell her about the snakes in the morning, how he got his cast and then the return trip that could have just been in his head. "Then I felt the same thing that happened...before. Wrenched my neck. Then I woke up in a tree and fell out of it, but I dunno. The black-outs happened last time. There's been nothing since, but..." He faltered. "I just can't tell."

"Turn around," Sam ordered, sitting down on the bed next to him. "I really don't feel anything out of the ordinary, but it never hurts to double check."

"For what it's worth, I'm sorry you had to go through that."

He turned around and rested his hands in his lap. "From what Rory said, it was probably just a nightmare. Wouldn't be the first time, but this one felt real."

She tipped Charlie's head forward. "Hair's getting long," she said casually as she moved it out of the way to check the base of his neck. "And you're clear, near as I can tell."

"You gonna be okay?"

Charlie shrugged. "Have to be." He leaned back in the chair and looked up at her upside down. "Think I'll feel better when I get to shoot something." He gave a weak smile.

"Curse of being us, I guess," Sam smiled back.

He nodded and let out a long sigh of relief. "Thanks, Sam." She was the only one he could really trust. He trusted Cameron, but there were some things - shared experiences - that only Sam understood.

"You know you can come see if I'm awake, right? If this ever happens again? I do get it," she said quietly.

Kawalsky got up and nodded. He reached out and squeezed Sam's arm gently. "Yeah. Um, I should get going. Got a workshop this morning. Thanks.. again."

"Anytime, Charlie," she said, meaning it in a way she did for few other people. "Have a good workshop and I'll see you later. Try to get some rest."
