this is what i want today for tomorrow

Mar 30, 2004 16:44

i start a new job tomorrow. its only 12hrs a week but thats $100 a week more than i'm banking right now. and then i'll get a another job--hopefully Vulcan Video with crazy miguel. fingers are very crossed on that.

my back hurts from sitting in this here chair and my brain hurts from not sleeping. and my tummy hurts because i don't feel like food because i'm sleepy but i can't go to sleep. and i can't sit still. this is going to sound cheesy like velveeta but since this insomnia stint time feels different. it passes really slowly and sometimes doesn't feel like it's passing at all. i think i could get on the computer and check my email and it would still say March 15. and so would livejournal and everything else. i would go outside and talk to people and i would ask them what day it was and they would say March 15 and i would correct them and they would be very confused and laugh off how they can't get their days straight. i think about that scenerio a lot.

i looked at grad schools today--anticipation of better things to come, huh? was thinking about what i'm going to do. there are a few things i'm thinking about. i looked at a few schools up north, east coast because i've got it in my head that's where i should go. didn't really get any excitement on that search. NYU, Stanford, blahhhhhhhh. Nick, a ridiculously loquacious friend of mine, has been babbling about CalArts for months now. He showed me a pamplet they sent him in the mail. kinda caught my eye. so i found their website and found their writing program and had i not been sitting in my underwear so close to the bathroom i might have shit my pants. not really but *breathe* i really wanna go there. i think i'm going to, even if i can only get close enough to smell the sweat of excited minds. okay so no one will want to read this but fuck it, i'll read it again. i've already read it like five times and talked to four people about it in the last few hours.

Writing Program Details

The CalArts graduate Writing Program in the School of Critical Studies is designed to appeal to students who wish to develop their confidence and range as writers in the uniquely eclectic, experimental ambiance that the Institute provides. The program provides students with specific opportunities in the areas of cultural commentary, new fiction, experimental criticism, writing for performance, and writing for interactive media. But while the program can accommodate applicants who want to develop their expertise in traditional forms of literacy and scholarly writing, it aims to address the needs of those who are interested in new hybrid forms that cut across categories traditionally regarded as distinct and mutually exclusive (creative/critical, fiction/non-fiction).
Integrated Media Option

Integrated Media (IM) is a program designed to support graduate students engaged in interdisciplinary work involving innovative use of technology. The project-oriented program is a supplement to most of the graduate programs in the Institute. Students from the six schools enroll in the IM Program to form an interdisciplinary peer group for critique and possible collaboration.

An IM student is expected, during each year of residency, to propose and work toward completion of an individual or group project. Experimentation and electronic and/or computer media should be integral to the project's concept, production and presentation. The project should be inter- or intra-disciplinary; that is, not easily categorized as writing, film, music, dance, or theater.† Students enrolled in IM must complete the same requirements as for the MFA Writing. Additional requirements-including IM seminars and critiques, specified Critical Studies courses, and electives from throughout the Institute-are set on an individual basis in consultation with the Office of Integrated Media.

Application to the IM Program takes place in tandem with application to the MFA Writing Program. To be considered for IM, check the box on the application and include in your portfolio documentation of appropriate work and a brief description of a project you might propose for your first year in the program.
Interschool Option

Interschool Writing students enroll in both the MFA Writing Program and in an MFA program offered by another school of the Institute (Art, Dance, Music, Film/Video, or Theater). Applicants must apply separately to each school. Requirements for the other metier are set on an individual basis or according to that school's requirements.
Assistantships
Teaching

The MFA Writing Program offers qualified students the opportunity to teach Writing Arts, a course required of all first-year students throughout the Institute, as well assist with foundation courses offered in the undergraduate curriculum of the School of Critical Studies.
Editorial

Interested students have the opportunity to gain editorial experience by working in the arts and literary journal of the Writing Program and other Program publications.
Technology

The Writing Program offers assistantships for technically qualified students to advise and instruct other MFA students and offer occasional workshops.
