A Carson/Daniel soundtrack

Memories of a Different Life - A Carson/Daniel fanmix

After three months of work (which mostly involved tracking down the songs themselves…) here it is - the first ever Carson/Daniel mix, complete with art.

There may be some minor spoilers for SGA and SG-1 but nothing major, as this does focus mainly on the relationship rather than the show.

It’s a little image heavy I’m afraid (front and back covers and art for each of the 22 songs).

The tracks - and some of the reasoning -

1. The Long Goodbye
This song kinda defines ‘Rising’ for me, in relation to this pairing. Only the one of them can go to Atlantis, the other has to stay behind.
Daniel really wants to go to Atlantis but he knows that Jack will never let him and Carson has made his choice.

2. Blue Eyes
This song is a Daniel one - his perspective on Carson and their relationship. It’s also kinda bittersweet.

3. Always
The song from which the title of the mix comes and the song that has really become the semi-anthem for Carson/Daniel for me. In this mix it’s much more a Carson perspective song through - in some ways - looking on their separation and the strong relationship he can see between Daniel and Jack.

4. Sewn
It’s a Carson perspective song (which, hearing the lyrics - I just HAD to include in this mix). It is again, a view on the limitations and doubts that exist in their relationship especially on the sweet Scottish Doctor’s side. Rising showed us that Carson isn’t the most confident of people when faced with situations outside of his expertise and this song touches on that. It’s also a view on how just how much he gives to any relationship.

5. How to Save a Life
The most used song in the history of fan mixes - or so it seems- but it was a must for this mix nevertheless.
This is a very Carson song for me - especially after everything that has happened to him and around him in Atlantis. It also follows the semi-breakdown that every relationship is bound to suffer when faced with the kind of situation Daniel and Carson are in. They are literally in different galaxies and every attempt that Daniel has made to get to Carson so far has failed.
It also touches upon the fact that they are both changing due to the circumstances they have found themselves in.

6. Far Away
This is a Daniel song- so many failed attempts to get to Pegasus (and Carson) - in particular it relates to Avalon/Intruder. Daniel comes so close to being on the Daedalus, only to have Vala appear and ruin it.
It’s all about Daniel’s regrets. He feels that he’s holding Carson back and all he seems to be doing is providing disappointment after disappointment.

7. Still The Only One
Another more Carson centric song. It relates a lot to ‘Poisoning the Well’ and his moments with Perna.
He’s left Daniel behind and has found himself in another galaxy, faced with a new enemy. The he meets Perna, who is so passionate about her work and of course, very pretty. He attracted to her, but in the end, she’s not ‘the one’.
Carson feels guilty, for using her and for ‘cheating’, but at the same time, he knows he’s only human.

8. Let Love In
It’s a Daniel’s perspective on Carson - all the things that he loves about Carson, as well as the qualities he knows most people don’t notice. It’s all about just how much he’s willing to do for Carson.

9. The Secret’s in the Telling
In the face of working with the military, and the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell clause’ the boys are down playing their relationship and doing everything they can to hide it.
It also touches upon their last night together before parting ways, about living for the moment and dealing with the price of necessity.

10. Let Me Go
This song has two sides - from a Daniel perspective it’s a pre-rising perspective, having to deal with not being able to tell his partner about what it is exactly that he’s doing. From a Carson perspective, it’s him trying to deal with the things he’s done and the way he’s done them since he arrived in Atlantis and if Daniel ever really saw that in him.

11. You’ve Got a Way
This is more of a general song - that just fit - but at the same time - it is again - a Carson perspective on Daniel.
Daniel was with the Stargate Programme for a long time before Carson became a member of the Atlantis expedition and he’s the one who’s there to help him deal with what it all means, the opportunity to do more.

12. Not a Day Goes By
Dealing with the distance between them. They both think about each other, whether its in the aftermath of something bad, or it’s just a momentary thought about how much the other would love to see something.
It’s all about missing each other, but not allowing it to get in the way. Neither one of them wants to force the other’s hand or make them feel guilty about not being there.

13. You’ll Never be Alone
Despite the distance, they still love one another, and would do whatever they can to help the other.

14. Chasing Cars
After all the stress and angst that they’re lives bring to them, sometimes all that they want to do with spend a quiet day together, wasting time, not having to worry about the fate of the Galaxy.
They also need something to hold onto throughout it all, and they’ve found that in each other, a constant glimpse of hope, something to fight for.

15. Comfortable
This is a perspective on the Carson/Laura relationship - I heard this song, and it just clicked for me, especially after a certain scene in The Return part 1.
Carson’s closest friends see Cadman as his perfect partner, but he doesn’t agree. There’s too much pressure on him, too much expectation and it’s not as comfortable with her as they think.
His relationship with Daniel however, is easier, there’s no pressure and he knows exactly where he is with him. It’s comfortable.

16. But I Do Love You
There’s a lot of things in life that the boys have problems with, there are even little things about each other that bother them from time to time. But they do love one another.
It’s all about the little things. A small human touch, or an unsheltered moment.

17. Samson
They’ve kept their relationship hidden from almost everyone else, mostly because of the military environment, but also, it’s partly out of a desire to have something that is just theirs. Something that isn’t in the undoubtedly think files that the IOA and the Pentagon have on them.
This song is about how long they’ve been together and the changes that have taken place during that time. They aren’t the same as they were when they first met, but they’re still together and it doesn’t matter to them that that relationship will never be recorded. They’re happy enough that they know.

18. I’ll Always be Right There
If ever Carson needed him, Daniel would be there, and vice versa. It’s not likely that either of them will ever meet someone who can understand them as well.

19. Take Me Away
They are exactly what each other needs, but the distance between them makes things hard. There are moments when they need to touch each other, remind themselves that they’re alive, but instead they have to find another way to ground themselves.
But sometimes, it’s not enough.
This song is all about the price that they pay, loving each other, despite their circumstances.

20. Torches
The distance is a weight on their relationship, no matter how much they wish they could work around it. Sometimes they wonder if they won’t be better off giving up on it.
