Get addicted in '79!

To start where i last left off, the movie premiere went really well. It was part of this program called Fly Films, where they had 10 groups, each making a 5 minute film on a randomly chosen topic. Pepe's group had art, and they did a film on orca fins and their influence on three different local artists. It was really good, and definitely stood out amongst the other 9 films. It was a lot of fun, and i was really happy for all the people involved. It was my first SIFF (Seattle International Film Festival) event too. I wish i could check out some other things, but the last three weeks of school is such a horrible time to do anything.

But, i'm going into the last week of school! Ooooh yeah. Summer summer summer, i can't wait. Not that i'm disliking school, i love it. I just want summer. I'm going to ride bikes and make bread and learn about lots of things and go lots of places. I was in the paper last week for being on the dean's list. Crazy. I think i might make it again this quarter. I rule at college.

I went to Burlesque Fest on Thursday. It was really really good, a lot better than i could have expected. Check out www.burlesquefest.com and see if it's coming to your town, if so.. Tija DEMANDS that you go. It will be worth it, i promise. I was very excited to see this. I've wanted to see a burlesque show pretty much since i finished reading Desolation Angels, and I was very impressed. As cheesy as it sounds, it really is an art. Those women are so incredibly talented, with the acrobatics and dance skills, and the command they have over their bodies, and the audience. They were all real girls with real bodies, with the ability to drive an audience wild. The show was just amazing.

A lot of the girls danced to live music, which made such a difference in the performance. Devotchka was incredible (the live band, and no not the Devotchkas). "Fucking amazing," as my companion for the evening put it. They combined an upright bass, tuba, guitars, accordion, and various other instruments and sounded to me like eastern europe meets latin america. If you happen to run across an mp3 or CD of theirs, i do recommend checking it out.

The Oracle Dance girls were definitely my favorite. Their music was great, from Devotchka to Tom Waits to Rose Mary Clooney. They were amazing dancers, and their themes and props were cute and clever. One of them did a dance mixed with acrobatics and spinning from a ring suspended from the ceiling. Very amazing. Catherine D'Lish was another high light. Her costumes and props were over the top, but in a good way. If you ever have the chance to see her, or Oracle Dance, take it. Just trust me.

MC Kitten on the Keys was adorable. Empire Burlesque Follies had the most beautiful dances with ballet influence and soft charming music. Miss Kitty Crimson was the only disappointment, don't believe any hype you might hear about her. She seemed more like a stripper than a burlesque performer, and she lacked any kind of command. She had an amazing body, it was just like she didn't know what to do with it. And local favorites the Gun Street Girls.. well, only two of them performed. The first girl i wasn't too impressed by, but Bella Baretta was great. She was rough and raunchy and a very different from the other girls' performances. It made for a great mix of acts.

And there's my review of Burlesque Fest that none of you probably wanted to read. But again, i really encourage you all that can go to go. This is probably one of the best burlesque shows around that you'd have the opportunity to see. So, go!

In other news, my brother is coming home tomorrow with his financée. I'm seeing the Cramps next week!!! And i still have 5 papers to write. But i still really do love school. Oh yeah, and i think i'm going to be an English major.
