He'd been asking for ages when he was finally going to get to learn to play an instrument, like Sachi had. And when, a few days before his seventh birthday, his mother came into his room early to wake him up and tell him to get dressed, that she had a surprise for him, he didn't quite know what to think.
But when the car pulled up and parked in front of the music store, he couldn't help but be excited. When his mom turned around in the driver's seat and smiled at him, the small, curly-haired boy already had the door open and was half out of the car.
"I can pick anything, right?" he asked, looking up at his mother with a bright smile on his face. Her nod prompted him to smile even wider and take off looking around the store, carefully examining instruments and asking questions of the salesperson, trying to be serious but failing at it miserably due to his excitement. When he came back dragging the salesperson, in turn looking a bit turned around and holding an alto saxophone, Fumie just laughed and shook her head fondly.
"Are you sure that's the instrument you want to learn, _____?"
"Yeah!"
"We'll take it then. Let the poor man go so we can go find what else you need."
"Yay! Thank you, Mama!" The little curly-haired bundle of energy shot forward to hug Fumie's legs, smiling brightly up at her.
"You'll have to practice every day, and take good care of it. Can you do that?"
"I promise I will!"
"Alright then. Happy birthday, _____."
