i'm sending you half my heart
wrapped in gauze and tied with ribbon
delivered to your doorstep one moist morning
a gift from me to you
i'm sending you half my heart
and with it i'm giving you
half of my love
and half of my hate
half of my hopes
and half of my dreams
half of my memories
half of my happiness
half of my sadness
i'm sending you half of myself
the other half i'll keep for me
tucked away somewhere safe
to be taken out on rainy days
i'll hold my half up
and marvel at the way it catches the light
sending sparkles of my soul
reflecting against the walls
i'm sending you half my heart
so you can take it out
when your half of the country is smiling
and remember me, a nation away,
in the rain
thinking of you
i'm sending you half my heart
and with it i'm sending you a little piece of salt water
that could be mistaken for my tears
but really comes from the ocean on my side of the country
the one you've never seen
i'm sending you half my heart
i'm handing it to someone who can hand it to you
i'm sending you half my heart
because so much of it has always and will always
belong to you
