The lost city, starring Enrique Murciano

Nov 20, 2006 10:39

So I watched The Lost City. On a theater. Yesterday.

It wasn’t promoted at all and if it wasn’t for Enrique being in it, so that I and my web-friends took info about the coming out of the movie in Italy, I would never know it was out. It is displayed in just a few theatres and I had to plan when and how to go watching it.

That being said, the ( Read more... )

I had the feeling I’d have from a long, not betaed fic written by a newbie. Oh, that sums it up perfectly! It really did need more editing. But I also liked a lot of it. I especially liked that it finally showed another side to the story that we never get to see.

With regard to Enrique's acting - I'm sure it was affected by the very small budget, which meant they rarely did more than one or two takes - if he didn't get it right first time, too bad!

And, oh! the beard! Very correct for the time, but very scary!

You're right. I didn't think about the number of cuts. Also, as they are scenes where he plays different moments of his trnasformation, the fact that they are not in order can't help him feeling the down slope toward desperation.
The beard hides most of his face and his arms are behind his back. Correct, but, tell me, how can somebody express all kinds of feelings that way?

I liked the movie, anyway. I liked the flashbacks (the scenes into other scenes), the slow scenes (and maybe this gave an uneven rhythm to the movie, from slow to fast and viceversa). My overall judgment is good. I only blame AG a little for wanting to do everyhting without any advice, or that's my feeling.

You make me happy, you could see the movie and Enrique in a big screen. As you write better than me, I see you had the same feeling as me when I watched it (with the difference I watched just in DVD and in my computer). I share with you all what you say and I missed the same as you, something about the deep in the feelings of the characters, as they hadn’t enough time or as you said someone needed a beta, or second pair of eyes caring the shot.

I don't get it: when I watched the stupid comedy Miss Congeniality he was shining on the big screen. This time it was as if he wasn't standing out enough. Is it the photography of the movie? Did they want to show him as if he was more veiled? Or is it that I want the most and the best when it comes to Enrique? Anyway, thanks for confirming that my impressions are right.

Yeah, you’re right, maybe it’s a mixture of the three questions. I’m not the best to tell you because my wishes are strong for a great Enrique and I always want more and more of him. I always had the impression that they had a very short time to shot the movie (just 35 days) and they couldn’t film some details that it would be great to watch. Enrique’s character has a lot of changes from the beginning to the end and I missed a bit more deep in it. It wasn’t Enrique’s fault, it was the whole movie. But I got a good impression of the movie.

Thanks for the review, carrieross.
I still haven't seen it. It was released in France during summertime, with no promotion either. Plus, you know me and dubbed version… :-)

You're not afraid of spoilers, are you? Otherwise last thing you should do was to read my comment. I couldn't help but talk about everything, just warning it was very clear how things were in the movie. Just tell me when you wanna watch it.

Where we most agree is about Fico's story with Aurora. Not only was it a second movie, but it was a bit too cheesy even if it wasn't in Cuba or in that moment.

I liked the movie, I'm just saying it could be better if AG didn't want to put everything in it, even using different styles while filming. When I submit my fics to a beta, they don't change the nature of the fict, they just warn me if I wrote something that is out of character or is a repetition cuz anybody has his obsessions. Sometimes a deleted line or word changes the fic in better, but I can still think it's my creature. I really think that you can feel it was a first direction and that AG put so much heart in it that he needed a rational second eye.
I'm with you about passions, but passions, because they are irrational, should sometimes be corrected. Not censored or repressed, but just adjusted to become art. At least in a movie.

EM broke my heart in a couple of scenes, but he was left alone to play some uneven scenes. Not his fault for sure.
