Dinnertime

But before the nightmares begin, there's dinner to be had. The sun's still setting, taking too long out here in the American south, so the lighting in the room is a little off. Just a little darker than it should be. As things are winding down, however, and you might already be getting ready to clear your dishes (from a rather depressingly patchwork meal), you hear the loud clinking of a fork on a glass, from near the head of the table

"...What's your name?"

[psychoanalolist]

"..." She spent a moment staring at him. Well, that was an advantage of working with children... she'd expected a little more protesting. "Annuska."

[de_bel_kid]

He tried pronouncing her name. "Annu...Annusuka?"

[psychoanalolist]

"..." Why was her name so hard for foreign people to say? "Try A-nu-shi-ka."

[de_bel_kid]

"A-nu-shi-ka." He said it carefully, before trying it again. "A-nu-shi-ka...Annushika...Annuska?"

I'm sorry Hungarian phonetics ares so silly. ^_^;

"Yes, Annuska! Just like that!" She put her hands together and grinned. Oh, he was just so sweet.

"Yay, I got it!" He's cheery, temporarily forgotten what the meeting was about.

"You like totally deserve a prize..." For a moment she considered going and getting some ice cream out of the fridge. But that would be a little much.

"What do I get?" A prize? Really?

[psychoanalolist]

"Well, like, probably not a real prize, but maybe ice cream or something..."

[de_bel_kid]

"Can I have ice cream, please?"

[catty_hat]

She peers up over the table at her. "But isn't--isn't it s--scary out there?" she says, almost inaudibly.

[psychoanalolist]

"No," she says in a way that she thinks is grown-up and authoritative but mostly condescending. "It's scary here, but if we leave, we'll find somewhere else that isn't scary."

[catty_hat]

She shrinks back at that. Why can't she say anything right? "O--Oh."

[psychoanalolist]

"So if you come with us, you'll be safe, you see?" Poor little Toeto. She just needs a big girl like Annuska to help her out, doesn't she.
