One Outfit

Around 8 in the morning, an unfamiliar gray figure appears on the network. Or rather, at first, gray fingers, fumbling delicately with the device. Soon enough these are pulled away to reveal their owner's gray face at a fairly good camera angle ( Read more... )

Canada remembers to turn on his communicator to respond, but not to actually respond right away. As a result, there's what seems to be a human child staring at Kanaya for a very long moment, before he blinks a few times, and shakes his head.

"I'm sorry, but you don't look like the trolls I know."

...she just has to wonder what other trolls this kid knows. That is probably a very interesting story. She speaks gently but with a fair degree of skepticism because the last she heard there certainly weren't trolls on earth. "That's probably because I'm an alien. So if you knew any trolls on earth, by definition they wouldn't be the same as Alternian trolls."

"... I see." He's not quite sure what an alien, or an Alternian is, but she seems to know what's she's talking about. And it makes sense. Fish is different different places, too. "Oh, and hello. I'm sorry you're here now, too. Please don't die."

...well, that's sure the opposite of foreboding. "I'll do my best not to." ...how old is this kid, two?

Closer to a hundred. But two's a good guess.

"Oh, good. That's been happening a lot lately and I don't like it. And, oh, I am Nouvelle-France," he adds in a rush, bowing slightly for the communicator.

To be fair, her guess of "two" actually corresponds to a human age of "a little more than four", so it's not too hard to forgive her.

"Has it?" That's a little concerning. ...as for Nouvelle-France, she thinks that must just be some strange human naming convention with which she's unfamiliar. It does sound just a little different from the others she's been presented with, but she's just going to file it away.

"Yes," he replied with a nod. "Sometimes you come back, but... I'm not sure you would right now. Things are wrong."

Well. That's interesting. "Are you running out of dreamselves?" Though the way he phrases it makes it seem doubtful that's the exact system they're referring to...

"Is that what it's called?" Careful, or it'll stick. "The last time people died, they came back as other people. Italie looked just the same as I do."

There is a risk of that, isn't there? "That doesn't sound like a dreamself type of system. Ectobiological perhaps." Nouvelle France is still giving the impression that death is flouted repeatedly, even more than the single dream self "extra life" in Sgrub.

He nods, still not understanding. It's probably worth noting that the word biology wasn't even really a thing in the time he's from. This strange troll is just impressing him with big words.

"No matter what it is, I hope you don't have to find out for yourself. You seem nice."

"I'll do my best not to. Same to you." She says it mosty out of what little she knows of human ettiquette, which for the record comes from about six hours of observation exclusively focused on the modern era.

"Thank you. I've been lucky so far, so I really hope you are, too." He pauses, wondering if he should say or not, because it is sort of depressing. "You might be here a while."

"Will I?" She had some idea of their being trapped somehow, really, but this is confirmation that definitely darkens things.

Canada nods, solemn. "I've only been here a few months, but I think some stay longer. But things have been changing. Maybe we'll go home soon. I hope we do."

Months -- oh, my, that's certainly a little less than she'd hoped for. "And so there's no way off the ship?"
