FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER
way way way waaaaaaay better than the first one. (and i actually enjoyed the first one even though critics hated it.)
but seriously, this sequel was bigger and better. and, i have to say, this movie was a LOT better than "Spider-Man 3" and "Shrek 3". best summer movie i've seen so far (tied with "Ocean's 13")
directing was better this time around. what's great about this movie is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. it plays around with the fact that it's a comic book movie. "Spider-Man 3" tried to accomplish so much in 2 and a half hours, and ended up failing. "Fantastic Four", instead of trying hard to be a serious character-driven film, just relishes in its comic book-ish nature. the treatment is very playful, light, and tongue-in-cheek. and as a result, it's a lot more enjoyable and fun to watch.
even Sue and Johnny Storm's respective dilemmas aren't dealt with in a very serious manner. and it shouldn't be. movies like this are meant to entertain. it's not like you make these movies to show off your acting/directing skills, hoping that you'll win an Oscar for it. that's like expecting a "Scary Movie" sequel to give you profound life lessons. and this time around, it looks like director Tim Story realizes that. as a result, he ends up making a blockbuster family film packed with action and stunning visual effects. (i loved the Galactus cloud thingie. and all those craters.)
yeah, leave all the serious "what-have-i-become", "who-am-i", "i-dont-recognize-myself-anymore" character-driven material for Spider-Man. Fantastic Four is all about the fun. so sit back, and enjoy.
acting-wise, the cast was good. all of them, except Jessica Alba. girl still can't act for shit. and i still think she's way too young to play Sue Storm and be partnered with a much older Ioan Gruffudd. she doesn't even look like Chris Evans' older sister. but hey, at least she's pretty. and besides, what's more important is that the cast is believable as a team. (and like i said, it's not like Alba's doing this to win an Oscar or something. she's there for people to ogle at her bueaty.) Michael Chiklis is reliable, as always. i haven't seen much of "The Shield", but Chiklis has always impressed me. this was no exception, even if he had less to do in this movie.
maybe the weakest part of the film was the writing. just like with the first movie, the script lacked wit. there were the occassional clever jokes, but for the most part, any attempts at smartness seemed juvenile and fell flat. (then again, this movie was written with kids as a target audience, so maybe i'm just too old for those jokes.)
basta. this movie kicked a lot more butt than the first one. loved it.
can't wait for the third movie! bring it on!
NOTE: do NOT get out of your seat until the credits start ROLLING. or else you'll miss the clip that sets things up for a third movie.
