GO SEE THE MOVIE '300'!
we went and saw it Saturday night after St. Patty's day dinner, and as soon as it was over i called john and suz to see if they wanted to see it today (it was literally so good i would have bought another ticket and watched it again as soon as it was over). they had seen it last weekend, but also wanted to see it again and mentioned that they have an IMAX where it was playing. so we went and saw it again today. oh. my. god. such a great movie. i have never cheered out loud during a movie before this one. i cheered. i laughed out loud. i cried. i listened to the people in the seats around me cheer and laugh and cry.
yes, there is blood and gore and a healthy dose of violence. yes, there are some movie cliches (but only the best ones). and yes, it makes the persians look like total assholes. apparently iranian groups are protesting the movie because they say that hollywood is prejudiced against them (the persians were the real-life ancestors of the iranians, not to mention a ton of other people of middle eastern descent). it's total BS to be offended by this. first of all, lots of groups acted like assholes in history. the catholics for one (I was raised one, so yes, I can say that). the greeks themselves- even though they are the "good" guys in the movie. the english pissed everyone off. the germans! has anyone forgotten what assholes THEY were?!? (again, i'm german and not exactly proud of what i'm sure some of my distant relatives did). all groups that were assholes at some point in history. all groups that movies have shown to be the bad guys from time to time. however, the important thing is that MOVIES ARE MOVIES. even the ones based on history don't have it exactly right. AND THIS MOVIE IS BASED ON A GRAPHIC NOVEL BY FRANK MILLER. THE MOVIE IS BASED ON A COMIC BOOK, FOR PETE'S SAKE! not to mention that, as a geek, i watched the history channel's account of the events and know for a fact that the movie was deliberately historically inaccurate to enhance the characters and the action.
obviously, i feel very strongly about this. and stephanie, if you and matthew want to see this movie, we will see it again with you. not next weekend, because i'll either be working or in ohio, but we will see it again with you. it's THAT good.
