I am doing a 2 week rotation in pain management, which falls under the anesthesia department. Although I thought I might learn something useful, I'm really only taking it because there was nothing better. I suppose I have learned that if I could think of one way to make anesthesiologists life more boring than it already is, it would have to be by adding in a pain clinic. Yesterday was the longest 7-hour day I've ever worked. Perhaps longer than the 36-hour day I've done on surgery.

Today however, we had a creepy 32 year old who came in with his parents. In short, he had been getting pain meds off the streets, had been kicked out of at least 3 pain clinics, and had the attitude of a 12 year old who feels that the world has wronged him and owes him. When my attending refused to give him a prescription, we left the room, and I closed the door behind us, only to hear "You're a fucking asshole" behind us. The pt got up and out of bed and slammed the room door back open. Slammed it so hard that the rubber doorstop that protects the wall from coming into contact with the door handle was crushed completely into the drywall. The resident and attending walk into our lounge area, and since I'm the last person, I decided that it would probably be best if there was at least one closed door between us. As he continues out the door and keeps swearing at everyone. I try to shut the door to the physicians lounge, only to have the rubber kickstand-type door stop fall down and keep the door wedged open. I kicked it up with my foot, trying to hurry before the guy could walk in as he continues to tell us to go fuck ourselves. Again the doorstop flops down keeping the door open.

By now I'm trying to decide if I should be more worried about getting smashed into the wall along with my door, or about looking like a moron because I can't close a door. On the third try I manage to close it, only to realize that there is no lock. So I lean against it just as I hear the guy slam his fist into the wall next to the door. The same hand with which he refused to shake my hand due to the incredible "pain" he was in.

All in all, I hope tomorrow is more like today than yesterday. It made the day go by a little faster.
