It had started out as simple nostalgia; this is going to be Dean Winchester's first winter at the Mansion, and Hisoka Kurosaki has fond memories of last year.  The question of snow seemed a rather large one, ridiculously important in a way no other aspect of weather really is, but that's probably more to do with what can be done with snow that ( Read more... )

It's felt more like early autumn than late autumn, but Tsuzuki can't help but think of winter. And so he's passing through the main room with a pot of hot chocolate and a fresh pile of powdered sugar donuts, ready to share with any who'll have them.

"Tsuzuki!" says Hisoka, with a smile. "What are you up to?"

"Ahh, I just felt like putting out some hot chocolate and donuts: it's not winter yet, but I guess I'm trying to get into the spirit," he says. "What's going on?"

Hisoka explains, "Dean and I challenged each other to a snowball fight...as soon as there's any snow to throw, that is. Then it was, 'Oh yeah, you and who else?' So now we're recruiting. Feel like backing me up?"

"You have to ask?" he says, chuckling gently, putting the platter and the pitcher down on a table. "Of course I'll back you up."

"Yes!" shouts Hisoka, clapping Tsuzuki on the shoulder (typist willing). "Now all we need is snow. Say, that hot chocolate looks good..."

"It should be: I added some cinnamon -- Just a tablespoon for the whole pitcher, mind you," he says, grinning, proud of himself for restraining himself. "But yeah, it's been a bit warm for snow, which is kinda weird for this time of year."

"Yeah. The temperature's dropped down a few times, and I've seen some snow flurries, but the ground doesn't freeze and the flakes just melt. Guess that's okay with me; I've had more time to work on all those building projects." Hisoka picks up a cup of chocolate, sniffs at the cinnamon scent, and tastes. He nods in appreciation. "It's delicious!"

"Well, that's a good thing: you got more work done before the ground freezes over; maybe you'll have enough time to finish some of them," he says.

"Good to hear! I guess I'm learning to go easy on the spice...at least in my cooking. But I'm not gonna go easy on the snowballs," he adds, with a chuckle. "Gosh...can't remember the last time I was in a real snowball fight. I was probably in my teens."

"Who'd you fight with?" asks Hisoka, curiously.

"Some of my younger cousins come to visit at New Year's Day," he says. "We didn't celebrate Christmas, though I liked the idea."

"It was pretty much Buddhist worship, in my household," reflects Hisoka, "and even that was kind of sparing. My dad was a real no-frills kind of guy." Seventy years separated their adolescent years in Japan, but when Tsuzuki talked about his era, it seemed very immediate to Hisoka. It had back in Meifu, too. "So, you and your cousins thumped each other with snowballs? Was Ruka still living with you, or had she left by that time?"

"That was the last winter she spent with us, actually," he says, growing a bit thoughtful. "In some ways, it was as if she was trying to pack as much fun with us into the time she had left at home."

"I bet she didn't go easy on the snowballs, either! Am I right?" Hisoka's eyes twinkle, and then grow thoughtful as Tsuzuki's. "What was it like, you staying and she leaving?"

"Oh, no, she didn't! She had a nasty throwing arm and a good aim, too!" he says, wincing a bit and laughing. "But yeah... after she left...I was happy for her, since she got to do some travelling and see more of the world outside of our village, but I missed her, too."

Hisoka replies, "I guess you would! Was she tall and slender, like you? Or short and compact, like...that girl in the Count's self-authoring book...?"
