It's been over a week since Morgoth assaulted him, tearing away half of the phage and taking it God knows where. Muraki can still feel the effects of the attack: his mind feels as if it's been wrapped in cotton batting full of thumbtacks. He's been avoiding human company, since he still feels vaguely defiled from the attack, but playing the hermit ( Read more... )

Guinevere will be about, quietly sowing a handkerchief and embroidering it with her own initials.

She's quiet and thoughtful, she's slept poorly of late for many reasons, some including the events of the siege, some including her convoluted love life.

She's sweet, less innocent than she seems, but always well meaning, and could listen, if prompted into a conversation. She's often worthless for advice, but has a good listening ear.

She's also pretty, which catches his eye, making it hard for him to concentrate on correcting an especially tricky passage -- a description of his first night with a woman, no less -- and he turns over the sheet as he looks up to get a better look at her.

"The light must be especially good for your work: it's clear and clean, one might say," he notes, gently.

"Aye, it is," Guinevere agrees quietly after she's looked up at Muraki. "Thank you kindly for noticing it, my lord."

"I would have to be blind in both eyes not to notice a lovely young woman sitting in the sunlight," he says, smiling and turning his chair to face her. "To whom do I have the honor of addressing?"

"I am Guinevere," she replies, simply. "My lord?"

Her name rings a bell, but he won't let on. Even still, he rises and bows to her. "I am Doctor Kazutaka Muraki, at your service," he replies.

Guinevere inclines her head politely. "Well met, then, my lord. Art well?"

She won't try saying his name - she's not even sure she retained it properly.

"I have been recovering from an illness, but I am better today," he says. "Do not trouble yourself over me: I hope the strange noises in the gardens at night have not kept you awake?"

"Alas they have, and I fear for those I know and love, who may have fought the creatures," she replies. Guinevere knows well enough that most of her friends or protectors tend to seek out adventure.

"I am, unfortunately, no warrior," he replies. He's not even sure he can still summon his familiars now. "But I am a physician and I can be of assistance in helping heal any injured."

“And yet you look ill, my lord, or hurt,” Guinevere says patiently. “Is all well?”

"Merely a severe headache: even physicians become ill from time to time," he says, minimalizing his condition. "Fortunately, there are other healers in this place and so I was able to call on their assistance."

"Thankfully," Guinevere replies softly. "Is there aught I may do?"

"You wouldn't happen to know of a good painkillers derived from any plants, would you? The medicine I've been taking seems to be wearing off," he says, his head starting to feel tight as he speaks.

"I'm afraid I am no healer," Guinevere replies softly. "And alas, the Merlin is not here."

He raises one hand. "Do not trouble yourself on my behalf: I've survived worse things than a bad headache."
