Kvothe had been a little more reclusive than normal the past few months, perhaps it was the weather that had him down, but now he's sitting outside, watching the new leaves waving in the spring breeze. The air holds promise for the season to come, and though the red-headed man is quiet and thoughtful he's in a fairly good mood and would welcome ( Read more... )

Tsuzuki is at work, putting the finishing touches on a garden project to be revealed at this year's flower-viewing party, and at the moment, he's walking through with a length of bamboo pipe over his shoulder. Which is when he spies the flame-haired fellow. "Hey there!" he calls out, pausing and resting one end of the length of pipe on the ground. "Beautiful day, isn't it?"

"It is," Kvothe agrees with an easy, amicable smile. "You look busy, what are you up to?"

"Ahh, I'm working in the garden, adding a few decorations: it's the Flower-Viewing Festival where I come from, so I thought I'd add a few things to celebrate the season," he says. "It's gonna be hard to top last year, when I dug the pond in front of the house."

"It's a fine pond, and that sounds like a marvelous tradition. What are you adding this year?" He leans forward slightly with genuine interest.

"It's a shishi odashi," which Kvothe might hear as "deer-scarer". "Water drips into a length of bamboo on a balance till it fills up and the bamboo tips down and empties itself. Then the bamboo tilts back and the other end of it hits a rock under it, making it go 'doink'. People used it to scare deer away from their crops or their gardens, but for the most part, it's just nice to have in the garden."

"An elegant solution," Kvothe says with an approving nod, "harmless to the animals and not unpleasant to the people. May I see how you make it?" Kvothe loves knowing things.

"Sure thing!" he says, grinning. "I'm gonna do a test run once I get this line linked up. Come on, I'll show you." He beckons Kvothe to follow him, as he steps away toward the pond.

"Thank you," Kvothe says, rising to follow. He's looking forward to seeing how it's all been built.

He leads Kvothe down to a rock by the edge of the pond, where he's set up the gadget. Right now, it looks like a very small off-balanced see-saw made of bamboo with a rock under the lower end. There's another length of bamboo above the upper end, tying into the same water line that feeds the pond.

"So this line here," he says, resting a hand on the water line. "Drips water into this pipe here," he lays a hand on the arm of the see-saw. "Once it's full, it'll tip down and empty." He tips down the upper end. "And when it empties, it makes a neat little sound." He drops the pipe, causing a hollow "doink" on the rock.

Kvothe watches interestedly, nodding. "Very nice. You really have done a marvelous job with all of this," he says, gesturing around at the pond and its surroundings in general. "If I were ever to find my way back where I came from it might be nice to build something like this behind the inn," he muses.

"Yeah, it's meant to scare deer and other crittiers away from nibbling the garden, but it also gives the garden a peaceful feeling, too," he says, smiling. "So you keep an inn? Where are yiu from?"

"I do, a long way from here in a place that I'm sure you've never heard of." He smiles a little, knowing that he'd never heard of the places that everyone else is from before arriving here either.

"Ah, try it on me: I like hearing about other people and where they're from," he says, grinning.

"A tiny spot in the middle of nowhere called Newarre. I own an inn there, called the Waystone." Even people from the same world as Kvothe has probably not heard of Newarre.

"Ahh, little places can be nice: I grew up in a small village myself, so I know what it's like," he says. "They're peaceful places, that's for sure."

Kvothe nods, smiling almost wistfully. He'd liked the place, even if part of him had been suffocating there. "They are indeed."
