[Mingler] Adolescent perspective projecting life's forecast to the stars

Apr 02, 2011 13:46

Finally, everything's ready - and Johnny's been in a better place than he has been in a long time. It has to do with a lot of factors: there's a basement bar that he can call home, and though it's not the Underground Cafe, it's close enough - better, almost, because that's one he worked to get into shape. Now, he would love to have Marie-Jeanne around, but... he doesn't dwell on things.

Better yet is the knowledge that he has friends - Natalie's been well, stable, comfortable in her own skin, and that makes him happy, because they both worked so hard on the friggin' damn boat to piece themselves together that he can't stand the thought of her being broken. Call it tough, big brother love. Madder yet is the thought that he has befriended a mofo death god. And that the death god plays the drums, what. But Ryuk is good, Ryuk has been reliable, fun and trustworthy. Shocking, we know.

So Death and the Maiden, aptly named, Johnny muses, chuckling, no matter what Nat says about sissy classical composers, has been rehearsing hard, practicing a set of classic rock songs and giving it a twist of their own. Eda helped with flyers and posters, to announce the event. Nina got out of her cave (Johnny's not letting her dig herself into a whole, ever again - he feels a touch guilty for that) and agreed to cover his back while the band was on.

All in all, it's good. And the fact that Amber isn't here is a barely flitting thought. Too busy for involvement, Johnny tells himself, and he means it - though he's grateful that she snaked him into cleaning up the damn place.

So there's a bar in the basement - a couple tables and chairs, stools, a counter behind which booze has been stocked and brought downstairs painstakingly, with a little help from his friends. In a corner, there's a jukebox, which made Johnny cuss and swear, but now it works - it will be put to merciless contribution when the band is done with its set.

And now there's a band playing, a girl at the keyboards with a folk, country voice, doing harmonies. An energetic, aggressive, leather-wearing thug who ends up shirtless throughout the highest energy song's evolution after having almost destroyed his beloved guitar (but managed not to, miraculously). For those who can see him (who have died, been touched by a Death Note, or have some supernatural ability that allows this), a gothic clown with pointy teeth, piercings and an androgynous bodice is going nuts at the battery. They're good by virtue of having fun doing it and giving rock n'roll all that they have, heart and soul - but they're certainly much more of a garage band than anything else. It doesn't matter: it's fun. It's for fun, even.

So come one, come all. Maybe you've seen a flyer or a poster, which said:

Rock Concert with Fusion Pop Rock Alternative Band

Death and the Maiden

At the Basement Bar

The posters and flyers also feature clear indications about the bar's location and explain that drinks will be served by a barman and barmaid. There's a reason for this: the idea was to recreate something familiar, to start. But the fact that the booze has to be carried downstairs from the plothole also warrants that someone makes sure that no-one plunders the stock unduly. It hasn't been an issue so far - but the bar wasn't officially open, and only a few (mostly people Johnny knows) have come down for drinks. For a larger scale event... it's nice to have someone making drinks - not to mention mixing cocktails.

[OOC: So, as announced earlier this week on the OOC com, here be the famed bar-rock concert mingler. Feel free to tag in, tag each other, etc. Johnny, Ryuk and Natalie will be available to talk to after the show. Johnny's going to be back behind the bar, perhaps a bit breathless at first, but. Nina Rosario will be behind the bar covering for Johnny for the first half of the event. Those who want drinks may feel free to assume that either Johnny and Nina served them whatever it is they wanted.

Title ganked from the aptly titled song Drunk Sincerity, by Bad Religion. For your rockin' pleasure, typists have concocted this playlist, which would be kind of what the band has been playing.
