[Open Post] Gone Huntin'

Nov 19, 2010 19:08

The November rains have finally let up enough that folk can get them some outside work done. The woods are bare now except for the dark green firs and the lighter green pines, and the russet and dark gold and tan of some oaks still holding their leaves. With the month waning, it's getting close to when most folk would be celebrating the harvest. ( Read more... )

For a change, here's someone calm and generally not aggressive, angsty, or otherwise complex to speak to.

Belize might be bumped into going in any direction to or from the woods. He's picking apples (the last few of them), and intends to be baking a pie later. He's got Thanksgiving on his mind as well.

He's managed to bring down a second bird, which he's lugging toward the house when he passes through the orchard and spots Belize. "Y' pickin' them for applesauce or a pie?" he says.

Well, that feels damn familiar. "Pie. With apple sauce in it. Why?"

Also, hello, who are you?

"Best time a' year for it, goes good with turkey, too," he says, eying the floppy-headed bird slung over his shoulder. "I'm Mal, Mal Reynolds."

Belize eyes Mal and isn't sure (yet) what to make of him. "Norman Arriaga," he replies. "You from the red states, aren't ya?"

He's referring to the usual red/blue terminology. And is already betting that Mal votes Reagan. We're pretty sure he'll be able to dis-spell this preconception, though.

If Mal was a voting man (and it's unclear if the Alliance was a thinly disguised dictatorship or just a really constrictive democracy), he would likely vote libertarian. But either way, he gives Belize a baffled look. "The red whut?" he asks. "There's red planets where I come from: th' one I was born on was kinda blue an' green. Before th' Alliance blasted it into a brown rock." He sounds deeply bitter about that.

Blink. "... guess you could argue that Earth is blue and green too. Though in in my experience, it's mostly grey and brown." Yay, sky-scrapers.

"Nope, ain't from Earth: grew up onna planet named Shadow, but yeah, coulda been Earth's twin," he says. "Or th' twin of what's known in my world as Earth-That-Was."

.... and then Belize stared at Mal.

He's trying to decide if he's talking to a madman or what.
