prince of men face? [open]

Oct 25, 2010 21:36

Henry hasn't been out and about for a while, but he's descended tonight, early in the evening. He looks fairly normal - with things going better with Anita, the color of his eyes is almost back to human hazel, just a touch darker than they should be, and he could pass for a rather anemic human being. He seems relaxed, if a little bit thoughtful, ( Read more... )

Well. Here's an ex-girlfriend, Henry. An ex-girlfriend who is happy with her lovers, worried about her son, not married but feeling very committed to the men she loves, and generally, Iggy-related worries aside, feeling happy, stout, able. Phedre is, generally, in a good place, or trying to be, for those she loves.

And seeing Henry - in such contemplation. So serious. It does strange things to her. They didn't exactly part on good terms either.

But she can't bring herself to leave, so she's there and almost transfixed.

He can feel her there, and takes a moment longer, holding Christ, in silent contemplation. Or possibly avoiding talking to her a moment later. He's not sure what to make of her or what happened there. Of course, he's not exactly accustomed to maintaining long term relationships, except for...Vicky, previously, and look how that ended.

He turns, finally, taking her in. She looks well. Her cheeks glow and she looks alive, healthy. Almost, he thinks dryly, in direct contrast to his current condition.

"Comtesse," he says, politely, and inclines his head, unsure how he should take this meeting.

Though Phedre has no need to bow to any peer, she curtsies to Henry, eyes averted, polite in the extreme.

"Your Lordship," she replies, quietly, eyes downcast before she brings them up to him.

"It has been some time."

Just stating the obvious, but also, perhaps, an invitation to conversation. Their story might have ended in sadness - it nonetheless was dear to her, and she recalls his arms around her waist as if it were yesterday. She's unsure what to think of this.

"So it has. You look very well. Glowing, if I may say so." She smells sweet as well, but he's trying to ignore that. It's not as hard as it could be. Still not easy, but he'll consider it a challenge. (Right.) "You're flourishing."

He remembers her unhappiness and dissatisfaction, and he's glad to see it gone. Even if he's not at all sure how he feels about her now, and how they parted, and how much of it is on him or how much he regrets it.

There's just a lot of uncertainty surrounding her. Which he's not used to.

"Thank you," she replies, still very polite, a touch too formal, maybe. She just doesn't want to behave in ways that would create further awkwardness.

"-- have you been well?"

She's genuinely concerned, even if... well. Uncertainty indeed.

It's making Henry a little awkward, though. He frowns, slightly, brows furrowing, and finally just nods, barely. "I have, thank you," mostly, other than a little bit of ...trouble. "I couldn't complain."

Well, he could, and probably did, to himself, but it wouldn't be terribly dignified to whine to all and sundry, would it. :|

Phedre tilts her head and looks at him, eyes a bit clearer. "It was that bad, was it?"

There's gentle worry in her voice. No matter what ill came to pass between them, she still has feelings for him - affection, concern, name it what you will.

He examines her for a moment, wondering what changed, and finally gives her a very slight and faintly unhappy smile. "It wasn't pleasant, no, but it's over now. I can simply be relieved for that."

Which is a clear signal of 'thank you, but I'm not certain I can let you in to this part of my life.'

On the other hand... "Who is it?"

He can't help but ask.

Phedre is of course well able to cue in to this double entendre, and smiles a little.

"Someone very different from you, Your Highness," she replies lightly. "Does it matter?"

Her tone, elegant and pleasant, does imply a message of its own - as you will hold back from me, I will do the same from you. Such is life, love.

"Of course it matters," he says, eyes briefly narrowing. "Different from me how?" Not cultured? Treats you well? More specifics please I am not trusting you to just anyone and I do still have a role in your life, is the subtext there. Henry is like that.

We know it's infuriating. Feel free to call him on it.

"Different, is all," she replies, and gives him a bit of a look. "He is loyal to me."

That might be a bit of an under-handed jab.

Because you, Henry, were not.

Henry's expression barely twitches. That does sting. Just a touch. He had his reasons okay. And and and. And he knows he is making excuses, but he makes them to himself in his head anyway.

"You seem awfully unwilling to tell me anything about him. Should I be concerned?"

Yes, and stubborn, too!

"Henry," she tells him blandly, "You should keep to your own concerns. I am happy with another man, others, even. Pray not lay my happiness to waist by trying to lay a claim which you've long forfeited."

Because let's face it. There's Sandor. There's Oberyn. There's Mildmay.

That's all.

Pause.

"We have a son."

"I lay waste to nothing," he says, slightly clipped. "Is it so much that as a former lover, I worry for your safety? You haven't always been entirely well here. I'm glad to see your health improved. I wouldn't expect simple concern to be so unwelcome."

...eyebrows: up.

"Do you."

"We do," she replies, and her tone is firm and gentle. "It's been over a year, now, and so my consort and I have taken a boy into shelter. My lover also has a daughter of his own, and so my life is complete."

Even if she's worried about the children - hers and Oberyn's, she is in a generally good place.

Whiiiich reminds me, whenever you're ready, can we have a Jaenelle post for Phedre and Iggy? >.>

Ah. A foster child. Not a...well, that's better. For some reason. Not that he has any right to be thinking that, but think it he still will. It's not as though she can read those. And just examines her, for a moment.

"They treat you well?"

And it's nearly an admission of surrender, in the quieter tone he says that. He can see that they do, on her face, in her body language and her feelings.

I'll have that up tonight! Doing a bit of ficcing after I finish tagging up but I'll put it up before I do that.
