Not a Shinigami but here's somebody who knows about L - if only by reputation.

Teru Mikami looks distracted as he walks down the hallway. He's muttering to himself and is making some random, twitchy gestures with his hands, almost as if conducting an invisible orchestra although the gestures don't even make that much sense.

By the time Mikami and Riyuzaki cross paths, he's sitting in the hallway and crouching on a bench, looking quite the fool as he worries at his thumb.

He might look a bit mental himself, actually, and his eyes do follow Mikami curiously.

The figure catches Mikami's eyes and he pauses in his tracks. Something about that man seems familiar... then he realises with a shock that he reminds Mikami of Near; something in L's manner. The realisation makes Mikami's face darken and it is with an air of instant dislike that he addresses the man.

"This is not the place to be sitting idly," he eyes L suspiciously.

L looks up at the stern man with innocent, seemingly bewildered eyes, and blinks.

"-- I didn't know it was forbidden," he says after he's taken his thumb out of his mouth. "Are you the keeper of this place?"

He looks absolutely innocent, a bit of a simpleton, even. His voice is calm, barely audible, and would be gentle if his tone weren't so, well, toneless.

"I am a lawyer and there are rules that need to be followed," Mikami sounds grim but seems oddly hesitant and furtive. "But I suppose it isn't against the law to sit like that there."

L smiles a little. "If it were, I would ask you which country has such a law," he replies, and tilts his head.

"Who are you?" Totally non sequitur. It's (maybe?)part of the act.

"Loitering is against the law in many countries," Mikami counters.

"My name is Mikami. Teru Mikami."

"In public places," L replies. "Which, unless I am incorrect, is not the case, as this is a dwelling, and it seems I live here."

He doesn't bother with offering a name. Whether he's heard of Mikami or not, he doesn't seem to recognize him.

There was a short debate in chat about it, what do you think?
Wil> hey, DN fans, think L would have heard of Mikami?
Meg> Wasn't Mikami later? After the time jump?
Matrix_Refugee> Yeah, I doubt he would have heard of him...
Wil> yes, though I'm wondering if as a prosecutor, he would have been well known even before?
Lise> Yeah, he was. He might have turned up on KiraTV or whatever it was - it is possible that he might have heard the name, I guess? Just no association, if he had.
Meg> Could be
Wil> XD I'm going to prod Mikami's typist too XD

... so, your thoughts?

"Everybody lives here and so you need to respect this as a public place because of that," Mikami argues. He may be a bit too intense for the subject. It was a minor point but it was still a question of what was right and what was wrong, to him.

"What is your name?" He presses, as if he was going to take a note of it for future reference in court.

[ooc:I agree that L might have a vague knowledge of Mikami but not directly related to the Death Note since, like they said, it was after L's time. I've made Mikami's knowledge of L vague because of that too, although he'd know about him in theory due to the publicity about Kira at that earlier time. So he doesn't know who he is right now, only that he thought he vaguely resembled/seemed a bit like Near to him - which did make him automatically defensive.]

Because he's recognized Mikami, L smiles a little, patiently.

"Eldorado Coil," he replies, and looks absolutely comfortable with the assertion.

[ooc: Yeah, then we're on the same page. ^^ I thought it would be more a reputation thing, indeed.]

"Where do you come from?" His tone is quite demanding, wanting the facts.

"My last location was in Tokyo, if that is what you mean to ask."

"That's not a Japanese name," Mikami points out, eyeing L intently. It's difficult for him to place what L's heritage may be, even though he would pride himself on being observant.

"I knew that already," L replies blandly. "Are you objecting to my non-Japanese name, Mikami-san?"

It's probably apparent that non-Japanese name or not, Eldorado Coil can speak Japanese flawlessly.

"Not an objection as much as you are with-holding information from me, obviously."

"I've simply not volunteered it. I was visiting friends in Japan prior to coming here."

Yes, L is lying. L has a nagging feeling that you aren't to be trusted, Mikami. Has to do with your tone, mostly.
