Albert Herrera, formerly the Viscount de Morcerf--it was hard not to remind himself that with almost every step he took--heard the boarding call for the shuttle to Luna. He gave the attendant his ticket and passport with his new, and entirely legal now, name. It had been his mother's name, and after she'd retired back to Marseilles, he'd been content to take it. It had taken the better part of a year for him to get everything lined up to leave Earth though. He didn't have the money for his education anymore, so he'd had to study and take a lot of tests to earn a scholarship to an offword university. He'd never thought of himself as smart--not compared to Eugenie or Franz anyway--but he'd done well enough to get admitted, so that still shy of his 17th birthday, but not by much, he was on his way.
With the right education, he'd be able to have a career of his own, and someday people might forget Albert de Morcerf in the light of Albert Herrera's accomplishments. He had hope anyway. In the end, what else did he have left? He couldn't hide with his mother in Marseilles forever. He needed to look after himself now, and forget the awful legacy of his father's betrayals and the tragic summer of the Count of Monte Cristo's revenge. Paris wasn't even rebuilt from General Morcerf's coup.
But Albert wanted to go. He needed to go. Time to grow up for real.
He was very preoccupied when he walked through the boarding tube, so it took a moment for him to realize he was no longer where he thought he was. This was not a shuttle, very much not so. The corridor looked like an ordinary house--well, perhaps not so ordinary since it already seemed very large--but a house with windows looking out onto a grassy lawn. Summer sunshine flowed through the glass, and Albert stepped in the main room and just stood there, with his jaw hanging open. How did he get here?
