The game is over. Nobody won, any more than anyone in the Shinigami realm really won those interminable rounds of gambling. As soon as he realizes the game was coming to an end, that Light's fascinating plan had fallen apart, Ryuk leaves the warehouse, leaving the humans to squabble among themselves and phasing through the iron roof before vaulting

Deceptively innocent looking blonde, sitting in the main room on her feet, and reading her own book. She keeps tucking her hair back behind her ears as it falls forward, and seems quite unselfconscious - and extremely normal.

No one can say Jaenelle doesn't know how to take a break and relax every once in a while.

People around here sure like to read books, Ryuk thinks as he approaches the blonde girl. He almost didn't go near her because of that, but her hair makes him think of Misa, whom he thought was very interesting and... oh, right, cute. She wasn't afraid of him and even hugged him when she'd gotten her memories of the death note back, something that no one had ever done before. Or since, though he wouldn't mind: it's an interesting feeling. Thus he comes closer and lowers himself to the floor, looking at the girl with his head cocked, curiously.

Jaenelle objects! Books are marvelous. However, she finds the strange one who has just approached her and sat down much more interesting. She smiles, barely, and lifts up her head to look at him.

"Well, hello," she says, probably with surprisingly littler startlement or concern. "You must be new - I'd have known if you were here before."

"Yeah, just kinda wandered in here," he says. "What is this place anyway? Doesn't feel like my world and it doesn't feel like the human world, either." He likes her smile and the fact that she's not afraid of him, either. The only thing that would make her as cool as Misa is if she gave him an apple...

"That's because it isn't either," she says, still examining him with an open kind of curiosity - but Jaenelle has never been one to expect people to look normal. Or be normal. It would be silly of her. "It's an in-between place, or maybe a nowhere-place. Explanations differ, because no one really knows exactly. --I'm sorry, what's your name?"

She'd have to know you wanted one, Ryuk, but she would be glad to feed you as many apples as you want.

"Me? I'm Ryuk," he says. "Nice meetin' yah." He glances around her and says, "Hey, you wouldn't happen to have any apples on you? I haven't had any in a while and I'm starting to get fidgety." His long limbs are starting to twitch a bit, which adds to his inherant weirdness.

She blinks, a moment, startled, and then smiles slightly, calls in a basket of them, and offers it with two hands.

"Like these?"

He stares. "You-you're amazing, lady!" he cries, his face brightening, if that were possible. He takes one of the apples and sniffs it before chomping into it. "This place aint' so bad after all, if there's someone like you in it. They don't have apples like this where I come from."

Congratulations, Jaenelle, you just made a friend for life with one of the other, weirder shinigami...

She beams, pleased that she can make someone happy, and leans back, letting him enjoy them. "There are plenty here, and trees out in the yard that'll ripen in the fall," she advises. "You won't miss for those."

"Oooh, I think I'm gonna stick around here, then," he says. "Are there more cool people like you?" he asks.

She laughs, lightly but like little silver bells. "Mmm, I suppose that depends on what you mean by like me...do you mean people who will feed you? I think there are at least a few of those."

"Well, there's that, but I guess I meant if there's people as cool and interesting as you are," he says, starting on his second apple. "I don't like bein' in places where there's boring people."

She can't keep her mouth from writhing, a little. "Oh, I don't think you'll lack for entertainment," she says. "There's usually something going on in this place, somewhere...just hope it's nothing that brings the house down around our ears."

"Yeah, that might be fun to watch, but then yah got no place to live afterwards, so that's no fun," he says. He's learned to be a little practical after his time in the human world, but only a little.

Jaenelle shakes her head, a little. "I mean more in the figurative sense, but basically," she says, and looks up at him, head tilted slightly. "Do you want to sit down?"

"Nah, I'm fine up here, as I don't get tired... well, not usually, but if it makes you feel better, I can oblige," he says, and sinks down to sit next to her, his long legs folded under him.
