He has lost.
That fact hits him when he first staggers out of the warehouse, clutching his shoulder, the blood running over his hand and down his jacket - so messy, so damned messy. The wharf stretches out for a long way, but there's nowhere to go, and no one he can reach. He is going, Light realizes, to die.
All the same, he makes it for a while; it is on the stairs when his body fails him. He stumbles at the first flutter of his heart, only to fall as it seizes, stutters, stops. He feels it like a vice around his chest, and that is aside from the bleeding bullet wounds - damn you, Matsuda - and Ryuk - Ryuk who was never on his side-
Light catches himself on the railing so he doesn't slip further down the stairs, tightens his grip, trying to breathe. The breathing is easy. It just doesn't seem to do any good at all. At least, he thinks, blinking up at the square of setting-sun light through the open rooftop, it will only hurt for forty more seconds. Less than that, now. And they will find him, of course, but by then it will not matter...
The end is near, Light thinks, and almost chokes a laugh. No. The end is Near.
God is dead. Injustice has won. And the last thing he sees before his eyes close...
And snap open. "L," he says, and then realizes that he heard himself. Light Yagami stares up at blue sky and clouds. He fumbles a hand over and checks his shirt. Unmarked. His chest aches and he feels as though he's been pummeled within an inch of his life, but he is unmistakably alive.
Kira is alive.
He can't help it. Light begins to laugh, tossing his head back and laughing with a kind of hysterical desperation. So there really is a god watching out for me- for me! This is good. No, this is beautiful. And there is no stopping him now.
If the ache in his chest would let him get up. Hm.

Other relevant info: Taken from the end of the anime...I believe that's all the necessary. :D Throw people at him! I am inordinately excited about this. >.> Oh yes, and Light is completely note-less. To his total chagrin.
