Simeon's been in the library, and now he's sitting around the main room with a few books on circutry and computers, flipping through another about an early 21st century programming language. It's much simplier than the languages he's used to using, he doubts that one could create a genuine AI with it at all. Still, it's giving him a better idea ( Read more... )

My mother has a MA in AI -- I guess -- or was it my cousin? So I'll be merciless mwhahahaha.

Aaand if it's late enough for Adrian to have finished his frugal 'breakfast', which could be called 'dinner' by non-vampires -- albeit a frugal one, as aforementioned, he basically doesn't need too much food -- then he'll show up in the common room, a couple of old comic books under his arm.

He notices the unfamiliar young man and approaches him right away. "Hi there. It's nice to see a new face."

"Simeon looks up and sets down his book when he realizes that he's the one being spoken to. "Yeah, it is." He offers a hand to shake. "I'm Simeon, nice to meet you."

Adrian takes the hand gladly and gives it a healthy shake. "Adrian -- same. Mind if I sit down? You look terribly preoccupied."

"Yeah, go ahead. It's nothing that important, really. I've had plenty of experience with programming languages, even if I don't know this one specifically." He shrugs. "What were you up to?"

He sits down in an armchair and crosses his legs. "Nothing much, I'm afraid." If it's early evening he probably just woke up. "--but programming languages, hey. Does this mean you're at least from the 2oth century?" he asks, hopefully.

"Bit later than that, actually. The 28th." He grins and shrugs a little. "I don't think I've met anyone here yet who wasn't from the past, to me."

Adrian allows a sharp whistle to escape his lips. "---whoa. 28th. I'm -- surprised wouldn't be such a good word. Christ. I have a looot of questions."

Simeon laughs. "I'm a bit of a history buff and believe me, the more things change..." He shrugs. "I don't mind answering a few questions though."

"Sounds good, although maybe a bit ominous." Adrian ponders. "Curiosity killed the cat, they say. But." He clears his throat. "--are there still countries and, you know, continents then?"

"Well, lots of planets have continents," Sim says wryly. "And...well, there are cultural divisions and smaller governments on a regional and planetary scale, but it's all under Central back on Earth." ...Typist is pretty sure that's how it works anyway.

"So nothing's really changed, just...directions?" He's thinking. "No terrible cataclysm?"

"Well, it's expanded. Lots of other planets and moons have been settled, more have been explored, space stations built, humans have spread across the entire galaxy." A pause. "But no, no terrible cataclysm."

"It's always reassuring to hear that." He's still curious, but feels it would be impolite if he asked too much. "Why aren't people queueing here to ask you questions?"

"Most of them don't know. I usually keep to myself to myself, and it doesn't always come up." He shrugs. "It would probably be as weird to most of them as living like this is to me."

"Makes sense." Adrian is a bit thoughtful, and he tries to tone down his enthusiasm and curiosity. "Isn't life -- boring for you here? Without the technology I can imagine you had?"

"I do miss everything I used to have. I lost a lot, coming here, and not all in the ways you'd think. I'd do a lot to get that back." His eyes are distant for a few moments before he tries to shake himself out of it. He gets very homesick sometimes.
