Sophia's already decided that Sophie is one of her favorite people at the Mansion. There's a kinship in almost sharing a name, not to mention they're close to the same age, and Sophie is adventurous. That may or may not be a good influence on Sophia, but probably the former. Sophia has been in a protective shell far too long.
It was probably only a matter of time until the two girls decided to explore the barn. They made it more challenging for themselves by trying to sneak up into one of the lofts without one of the residents that work in the barn or that stable a horse in it from catching sight of them.
They may or may not have succeeded at that, but either way, the loft isn't off limits and no one stops them. They giggle for a bit, once they're up the ladder. And at first, it's kind of disappointing because mainly it's just a lot of hay, a pile of ugly, heavy blankets and some old, unused tack.
That is, until they hear the soft mewing. Rushing to the corner, they come upon over a half dozen kittens, mewing for their mama cat. They look to be old enough to wean.
The girls exchange a look, silent communication already seamlessly in place. Sophie grins toothily all the while, but lets her friend have the lead, probably because she's both distracted by the kittens, and because she likes when Sophia gets out of her shell some more. "Right," Sophia nods. "I'll get a basket to put them in and we'll take them to the porch." A determined nod. "I"m asking Mom to keep one!" "Me too, me too!" quoth the other girl.
It took a little longer: Sophie insisted on leaving a note for the mama cat, in case. Still, they cooperated well enough in transporting the kittens, and a pit stop, for milk, happened on the way.
