11-12 has been happily busy with his husband a lot of the time but of course he is happy to see Helen and goes over to her. His smile is more relaxed than she's ever seen it before.

"Mum."

When she hears the familiar voice, Helen lights up.

"11-12," she says fondly. She'll open her arms for him, walk over, kiss his brow. "How have you been?"

"Good. Wonderful, in fact," he enthuses. Genuinely happy.

"I'm so pleased, darling," Helen replies as she settles in her seat. "It makes me infinitely happy."

She takes a moment, takes a sip of her coffee, and daydreams.

She has things of her own, of course - she'd like to discuss them with 11-12.

"Is this... Would you have wanted this for me? Is this what you would have planned on?"

As usual when 11-12 asks such questions, Helen is ambiguous. It's partially by design, but also because we're not really sure ourselves.

"It's better," she replies, smiling tenderly. "I'm happy for you, 11-12. It's all that matters."

"That's... That means your not entirely happy, are you? Like my father wanted me to... have a family. Have children. Is that what you want too?" He's gone from happy to anxious within a heartbeat.

"I always wanted you to have free will," Helen replies seriously. "The Village may not have been the best place to exercise it, though."

"Free will. Is it really such a good thing though?"

"I don't know, 11-12," M-2 replies gently. "What do you think?"

Socratic dialogue: she doth like using it, betimes.

He frowns, looking down. "If I really had free will then the terrible things I did... I really did."

"11-12...." Helen begins gently, "... did you feel that you did them for a reason, when you did those things?"

"When it was happening, yes. But it was wrong," he pauses and looks pleadingly at his mother. "Wasn't it?"

Helen reaches for his hands, then, reassuringly. "It may not have been morally correct," she says softly, "but sometimes, one must do... questionable things, in order to survive."
