I did a Mindfulness exercise that instructed me to focus on a single object for five minutes, to help train my focus and being "in the moment".
I'm actually pleasantly surprised, the five minutes went by and i was really able to focus ( i chose to observe a hair barrette.) I found the activity really calming, and even enjoyable. Paying such close attention to the object was reminiscent of when i get really focused in my work, like when i'm with a client and we're having a really good session and i'm totally absorbed. that's when i'm happiest at work, too -- i hate when things are slow and my mind wanders, then time seems to creep along slowly.
I've been really struggling with staying in the moment lately. I either get caught up in time-traveling thoughts in the past (occasionally the future), or i don't want to deal with the moment so i try to escape, as has been the case lately when things have been emotionally very painful. I'm optimistic that these exercises will help me be more present; i used to meditate regularly, and so i feel like i have had many positive experiences with making progress in this area
