We hired movers for our Bronx to Queens move, who were supposed to arrive at 1:30 on Friday. They showed up at 6:30pm, looked at our stuff, and said it was going to take 7 hours--twice as long as they quoted and totally inflated. His exact words were, "I can tell she only quoted you 3 1/2 hours to get you to book." I told him that had the same furniture PLUS a couch and loveseat moved from my Ardmore apt to my mom's house in 3 hours...and when that crew finished early, said, "You've paid us for another 20 min, got something else to move?" and moved some stuff around for my mom. And that was only a two-man crew--these cheats had 3 guys! So, either they are the world's most inept crew of movers or they intended to cheat us. I vote for the latter, and don't even want to think about what would have happened once our stuff was on the truck. So, after some shouting, we sent them away. I actually yelled, "Get out of my house NOW!" I wanted to yell, "You are CHEAT!" like Borat from Ali G, but only Mike would have gotten it.
(Speaking of Borat:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/borat/trailer/ It's NICE!)
My brother Peter was on his way up with our fancy new TV anyway, so when he got there, we took his and Mike's cars full of stuff to the new place. (Mike had already packed his full of breakables.) Thank God we reserved a U-haul trailer to move a wardrobe to my brother's place in Philly, and we were lucky enough to upgrade to a bigger one. We called in some reinforcements (Annie, my mom, & Mike's mom), and moved ourselves in about 4 hours. Thanks also to Luke, who also helped us load on the Bronx end. Even still, we took a lot of breaks and we're not by any means professional, burly man movers. We moved my couches and all the shower gifts up from Philly yesterday, got stuck in traffic, and unloaded the last of it at around 11:30 last night. Everything's a chaotic mess. We slept with the mattress on the floor three nights in a row, because we were too exhausted to put the bed back together.
I hate to be all woe-is-me about having to move ourselves, but it was HOT, and we're on the third floor at the new place, so the move wasn't easy. That's why I hired movers, dammit! The bright side is that we're really happy with the place, and the moving oursleves saved us well over $300. The new apt is even nicer than we remembered from seeing the place. Every room is freshly painted, and they unexpectedly replaced the kitchen floor. And his cleaners must be related to my mom, because everything had a *ding!* cartoon sparkle. She usually feels the need to re-clean everything, but not this time. So we're really happy with it and are very hopeful that we won't have to move again anytime soon.
