Participation

Somewhat of a "hee hee" moment when the title of this entry is exactly the category I get credit in for making it.  It is a different type of participation that I'm interested in, though.  After reading through the Snow reading, he said something after being asked the name of his new film that piqued my interest, "In the new film I am thinking about some sort of different orientation or emphasis that the spectator has, some kind of different participation".  What this statement made me realize is that I don't consider media in the same way anymore.

For instance, I think that the word "participation" is far more appropriate regarding media in this day and age than simply "read" or "watch."  Certainly those are words of action, and I am taking action by watching or doing, but "participation" implies a form of interactivity that goes beyond utlizing one of the senses.  Perhaps I was just struck by the word, and this is coming off as a pointless discussion to you all, but when I think participation, my mind usually goes to something like "sports" or "work" and in these things I'm forced to act and make decisions while I am involved.

In regards to hypertexts, choose-your-own-path novels, and video games, I think participation is a very apt term to use.  I had never considered the word for things like books or movies, though.  I had also never considered that I'd care to to define a leisure activity to the extent where I'd debate the plausibility of certain labels.  Good times.
