Vegetable Garden

After the field fire back in January my parents decided to clear out all the large grassy bushes that used to circle around our screened-in pool. They really were a scary fire threat, although I will miss the rustling noises they made in the wind.

Instead, my parents decided to install a vegetable garden.

My parents used to be extreme gardeners back when I was 10-13 years old. We had a massive vegetable garden (in our postage stamp Connecticut yard). One year the pumpkins and watermelons took over the yard. :)
Those really were my sweet and crispy "salad days" -- homegrown corn, tomatoes, carrots, eggplant, etc. Mmmm.

I took two pictures: http://pics.livejournal.com/carolynwavering/gallery/00010zte

We don't do small projects in my family. You'd think we'd just plant a box of vegetables and be done with it - oh, no, no.

Start with a cement board siding fence (will not burn), which still is not finished. This entire project started with this pool privacy fence...
Add one vegetable box... and lots of ground plant rows.
How will we water them? Well, we are too lazy to go out there to do it every day so let's install an irrigation system. -_-;

It's a random selection since we aren't exactly sure what will grow in our area of Florida (we could look it up, but nah). They planted tomatoes, onions, cantaloupes, watermelons, carrots, corn (2 kinds), strawberries, and probably something else I'm forgetting.

Mom suddenly said she wanted to try to grow broccoli... ehh.

It's amazing how all the sudden we realize we have no idea how some things grow. On a plant (above or underground) or is it a bush, a tree, etc.?
