John Mayer and Rufus

Listening to John Mayer's new album, Continuum (Represent Fairfield, CT!). It really is quite good so far. How can I say it... it is much more instrumental than other pop music out there, very bluesy.
I suppose my main issue with Mayer's music is that I wish it were a bit more dynamic. Sometimes the songs have the same flow-- like you can visualize the up-and-down of the melody before you hear it. I also acknowledge that his songs have improved on that issue of sameness since his previous cds. And at the least, they have become musically more intricate... I look forward to see how maturity adds to his music in the future.

I caught his appearance on MTV's TRL (no, I don't usually watch that stupidity-fest) and he was so snarky, haha. That reminded me to check out the sound of the new stuff. One of his blog entries mentions being addicted to hearing Keane's latest album. He writes, "Listening non-stop. Listening like it was the only record I had on my laptop. Decoration for the phase I'm in.... Like David Ryan Harris said the other night, 'It's kind of like having a new Rufus album.'"

Yea for a Rufus Wainwright shout-out! I already am ready to fangirl a bit over his 2007 album. There is literally nada out about the recording process, but I'm excited nonetheless. I hope this next album shifts a bit away from the baroque operatic pop appeal of Want Two. I think Two perhaps went too far away from the accessibility of pop (although there still are a number of great tracks on the cd).
And just fyi, I think Want One is my favorite Rufus cd (from start to finish, I love almost every one of the 14 tracks- it also has my current favorite song in zee world, "Beautiful Child")... but uhh, I also like Poses quite a lot.
