Random- I was reading on MangaNews:
"The official
website of Kodansha's new josei magazine Beth will open on May 10th. Beth is a josei magazine that's aimed at "Pretty Otaku" and will start serialization in November. It will serialize manga, run columns on anime, games, novels, movies, cosmetic, health and various other information."
Pretty otaku? Lol, what? Oh, do they mean older females who... you know, love manga but wear clothes that match!!? ;D
Either way, I'm always excited about more josei manga. I think josei could find quite a popular niche here in the US because it is a more realistic form of shoujo. And just like shoujo, it has focus on emotions, relationships (of all kinds), and a general sketchy prettiness about it.
One popular josei that's made its way here already is Yayoi Ogawa's Tramps Like Us (aka: Kimi wa Pet/You're my pet).
Other examples of josei that I own are:
The works of Erica Sakurazawa
A Perfect Day for Love Letters by George Asakura
Both NANA and Paradise Kiss by Ai Yazawa (although Parakiss walks a bit on the border- and Yazawa's art is very different from the others listed here).
Nodame Cantabile by Tomoko Ninomiya might possibly be josei- I'm not quite sure which anthology publishes it. But, I'd call it josei based on the art, the maturity, and the general age of the main characters.
