Sanctuary

SNAKES ON A PLANE! (Ahem, now that I've got that out of my system...)

Kingdom Hearts II came out in the US today. I heard the complete version of the English theme song, "Sanctuary" by Utada. (AKA: "Passion" in Japan)

Even though "Sanctuary" was written first, I like "Passion" more. The lyrics are completely different. Sanctuary is repetitive of the same meaningless verses while Passion actually tells a story.
It's odd... I don't think Utada Hikaru's English songwriting has been as good as her Japanese writings. She's just not capturing the poetic nature of her songs when they are in English.

Ahh, but I'll also factor in that she was writing this song for a commercial project- and for Disney no less- so I'm sure there were a lot of limitations on the topics/complexity of the lyrics.
It is not my favorite Hikki song by a long shot. The tune is kind of trance R&B. I like her rock, pop, regular R&B, and hiphoppy stuff more. Plus, in my opinion, her voice sounds terrible in the song! I don't know why- perhaps it is too high of a key (although she sings high in many other tunes?) - I think the breathy highness is on purpose but it is not appealing to me at all.

Last night, I read through the three-volume CLAMP series, CLAMP School Detectives. It is a silly "all ages" (although, it is probably more appropriate to say that it is more 'PG' than 'G' rated) book. I was amazed to see all volumes of it checked-in at the library. I enjoyed it- although it is a vaguely purposeless story about a group of (incredibly mature) elementary school kids who solve silly mysteries.
I think I would have to read the connected books Man of Many Faces and Duklyon: Clamp School Defenders to get the full picture. I think these books feature the mystery solving trio of boys at different ages. Ah, Duklyon is as parody of shounen action series and the trio seem to only make cameo appearances. I forgot- CLAMP School Paranormal Investigators, which are actual novels.

The stories are all early works of CLAMP and feature the CLAMP School -the pentagram shaped inclusive district that appears in X/1999 (the trio of boys appear as adults in X). A Duklyon Cafe is a popular hang out for characters in almost all of CLAMP's works. Hehe, they also all shop at Piffle Princess (it has a distinctive cute mascot shape).
