Sojourn in Turkey, Day 9: Ephesus, Selcuk

Well, the day of our class presentations finally arrived. It was cold, a bit drizzly at times, and overcast... but that didn't stop us from completing our mission in record time! I forgot one or two points, but Dr. Walters came up to me and told me I did well. Dr. Knust said she'd never heard the story of Odysseus and Polyphemus told so well! I was proud, especially for making everyone laugh, because laughing kept us warm. :o) At the end, Dr. Walters said he thought we gave the best tour of Ephesus.

The highlight of this day was definitely the food. For lunch, Cjengis took us up to the Cave of the Seven Sleepers to a restaurant. It was so fun! The tables were Turkish-style, low to the ground, with cushions to sit on. I naturally found the hearth as soon as I could to warm my toesies. Even though we were in what was essentially a glorified tent, we were plenty warm. Jeri-Katherine found ornate Turkish-style dresses and hats hanging on nails in the beams supporting the tent fabric, so we took them down and put them on. She, Kelly, and I did all kinds of silly poses while Rob, Lauren, Elizabeth, Brian, and Cheryl took pictures. The food was delicious. I had a type of sandiwch-esque dish that was meat, feta cheese, spinach, and eggplant grilled between two tortilla-type things. I couldn't eat it all. Brian let me have some of his dish, which was small balls of dough covered with yoghurt and spices. We also had some yummy cocik, which is a cucumber and yogurt mixture with olive oil drizzled on top. We had to ask for bread to dip though, and without Cjengis to help us we got a fork instead! Eventually more tortilla stuff came.

Quickly we peeked into the Cave of the Seven Sleepers and then headed back to Ephesus. We got done pretty quickly with our presentations after that, so we had some time to do things in Selcuk. I took a nap and then met everyone for food at a fancy government-run restaurant. The hummus was soooooo good! I ate so much I couldn't finish my meat, oops. Then we went to the candy store and I got hooked on pistachio Turkish Delight. I'm definitely bringing back a lot more!

With no homework to do, we gathered in the basement room of the hotel to drink wine purchased in Sirince and smoke hookah. I was a hookah virgin, but I held my own... that is, as long as I could before I finished my first glass of wine. I was totally down for the count after that and headed to bed. What can I say? Wine is the best soporific for me.
