Dead Poets Society mix: we know the words (but it's not enough)

Fandom: Dead Poets Society
Pairing: OTP of five centuries Neil/Todd
Length: 14 songs
About: fanmix made for the OTP challenge at waywardmixes
A/N: I wanted there to be gifs or at least some pretty graphics, but I didn't have time to make all that :< So instead there are descriptions of the scenes from the movie (including deleted scenes) and a bit of my headcanon for the boys (mostly when it comes to desccribing their feelings). The poem at the end is an actual Todd's poem he was trying to write for the English assignment.
If you haven't watched the movie, there are some huge spoilers between the lyrics.

[Todd Anderson and Neil Perry are students of the Welton Academy, which follows ideals like tradition, honour, discipline and excellence. Everyone, including their parents and teachers, is expecting their kids to get prepared for their future careers: doctors, lawyers, bankers - all noble and, obviously, practical professions, though not necesserily the dreams come true for the young boys. It all changes when the new teacher, mr. Keating, takes over the English class and helps them discover the meaning of poetry, art and most inportantly - living the life to its fullest.

Todd Anderson has been living his whole life in the shadow of his older brother. He never speaks for himself and he thinks that everything inside of him is worthless. His parents move him to the Welton Academy - probably because following his brother's steps is the least they can still expect of him - where he becomes the roommate of one of the best students in the academy.

Neil Perry is the boy every other student listens to and feels natural to follow. He takes on all the responsibilities without a word of objection, because doing what his parents expect of him - which is becoming a doctor - is the only right thing to do.]

The Vaccines - Wetsuit
If at some point we all succumb
For goodness sake let us be young
Because time gets harder to outrun
And I'm nobody, I'm not done

Carolina Liar - Drown
So soon you will learn to forget
Bad times, the rules and regrets
One day they won't reach out for you

So you put out the fires you set
As smoke fades from your last cigarette
You're a mess but yes you're beautiful

James - Of Monsters And Heroes And Men
Rambling poets, manic with vision
We are the drivers, yet we feel driven
Moths in the moonlight, fooled by a flashlight
Caught in a jam jar, gasping for air

[Todd has never been included. He does all he can to stay unnoticed, mastering the art of being practically invisible in the crowd of other students. Yet somehow Neil, the person every other boy would love to be, gives him a chance. And then another one. And even when Todd still insists on being completely useless, he doesn't stop. He gives him another chance.]

The Frey - Look After You
When I'm losing my control, the city spins around
You're the only one who knows, you slow it down
I'll look after you

The Decemberists - Don't Carry It All
And nobody, nobody knows
Let the yoke fall from our shoulders
Don't carry it all don't carry it all
We are all our hands in holders
Beneath this bold and brilliant sun

James Blunt - Bonfire heart
Your mouth is a revolver firing bullets in the sky.
Your love is like a soldier, loyal till you die.
And I’ve been looking at the stars for a long, long time.
I’ve been putting out fires all my life.

[And finally, finally, Todd learns that maybe he's not so worthless after all.

It's hard to tell whien exactly it started for Neil. It might have been that time when Todd wasn't able to explain to their headmaster he hated soccer. It also might have been that day he caught him writing poetry for their English assignment. It's quite obvious the definite it moment was when he heard and watched Todd create poetry out of nothing, in the middle of their English classroom. That was when he knew what his verse would be.]

The Goo Goo Dolls - Better Days
And the one poor child who saved this world
And there's 10 million more who probably could
If we all just stopped and said a prayer for them

So take these words
And sing out loud
Cause everyone is forgiven now
Cause tonight's the night the world begins again

Mikky Ekko - Kids
We know the words but it's not enough, not enough
'cause no one heard.
Remember we're just kids.

Snow Patrol - Planets bend between us
The shells crack under our shoes
Like punctuation points
The planets bend between us
A hundred million suns and stars

The sea filled in the silence
Before you said those words

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Stop the Clocks
Lost inside my head behind a wall
do they hear me when I call?
and when the night is over, where will I fall?
and when the fight is over, where will I fall?

[Soon enough one can't exist without the other; Todd helps Neil practice his lines for the Midsummer Night's Dream while Neil turns Todd's worst birthday present into the first unmanned flying desk set. When Todd watches Neil perform on stage everything seems like it's finally in its right place.

The most accurate verse of his life ends a few hours later, when he's woken up in the middle of the night by his friends and hears the three most cruel words in the world: Neil is dead.]

Ingrid Michaelson - Turn to stone
I know that I am nothing new
There's so much more than me and you
But brother, how we must atone
before we turn to stone

Ben Cocks ft. Nikisha Reyes  - The dance is over
Hold on tight we're gonna take a fall
It's gonna hurt I've taken one before
I'd love to fight but I've said and tried it all
The dance is over and the band left the hall

Kodaline - All I Want
See you brought out the best of me
A part of me I've never seen
You took my soul and wiped it clean
Our love was made for movie screens

Newton Faulkner - Straight Towards The Sun
All I see
Drifting through my veins
Want to know where it all began
I see your face everywhere I turn
Now I'm left, eternally to bow.

[There are many poems that Todd is going to write in his life, but there's one he'll never be able to finish.
It starts with: We are dreaming of a new day, when a new day isn't coming.]
